“She’s gone.”

Dixon King, dressed only in a kimono and ready for bed, cursed. He rose from the balcony lounge chair and opened the sliding glass door to his bedroom. He’d been enjoying the winking lights on the Golden Gate Bridge and quietly celebrating a good meeting with Joulbert. But his happiness rested on the evening’s nightcap, the death of Kayla Blaine, and she was still alive.

“What do you mean gone?” King paced in front of his bed.

“As soon as the hit went down, somebody else showed up. One of my guys who survived said he wore all black and took out the two gunners on the sidewalk with a forty-five pistol. Before he passed out, he saw Blaine and this man run off.”

“You try calling her?”

“No.”

“Is this guy another cop? Friend?” King said.

“No clue.”

“Any unknowns like this are going to wreck our plans, Dresnik.”

“The unknowns began showing up after Charlie Kline was bailed out by a lawyer who doesn’t appear to exist.”

“Sam Raven.”

“You saw it too?” Dresnik said.

“One of my guys. Think he’s our man with the forty-five?”

“Probably.”

“You dig up anything about his background?”

“Military record. 82nd Airborne. Overseas postings. Not much after. What about you?”

“All I have is rumor,” King said. “He’s either a bad guy or a good guy, and nobody is a hundred percent sure which. Not many seem to live long enough to comment directly.”

“Did you ask Joulbert?”

“I don’t want to bring him into this.”

“He might have information. Maybe more than rumor. It can’t hurt.”

King said, “If he thinks we’re under attack, he’s—”

“What?”

“Never mind,” King said. “He can’t afford to pull out. It might not be a bad idea after all. I will ask him.”

“Good.”

“If Raven has Blaine,” King said, “he has Kline tucked away too. Has there been any sign of Kline?”

Dresnik said, “We have him at two separate ATMs withdrawing the maximum allowed a few hours after he was released. Nothing since.”

“The election is one week away. It’s the wrong time to lose control.”

“Looks like it all rests on this Raven fellow.”

“You do your thing, I’ll do mine. One of us needs to find him.”

“I’m doing all I can.”

“You need to do more, Dresnik. If we blow this, we lose. I’ve worked too hard to get this far to lose it because of your tiptoeing around trying not to get caught.”

“If I get caught, who’re you going to call from now on?”

“You’d be surprised who else I’d call.”

Dresnik grunted.

“Is Peter York going to be the fall guy?”

“Who cares? Blaine killed him. We can say whatever we want.”

King sighed. “Other than this call, today has been pretty good.”

“I’m glad one of us is having a good night, Dixon.”

King ended the call, opened a window and turned out the lights. Surprisingly, the sound of the ocean helped lull him to sleep.
