CHAPTER 7
LAURA
I am not calm.
My usual morning mantra wasnât working. All I could think about was how stupid Iâd been last night.
After being sure I wouldnât fall into his trap, Iâd fallen headfirst and humiliated.
I could tell the exact moment when regret had set in for Tom last night. Even in the darkness of his office, his body language had shifted, and it looked like the only thing he wanted to do was hightail it out of there.
So, Iâd given him an out. Iâd sucked up my hurt feelings and left before he could desert me because the last thing I wanted to do was to be stuck on an elevator with him while it made its slow descent.
Thankfully, he hadnât been around when I finally emerged from the bathroom after licking my wounds.
Iâd gotten in a cab and gone home to sulk with my favorite takeout order from the Chinese down the street.
Later Iâd called my best friend, Hailey, and groaned into the phone for an hour about my questionable decision-making.
I could still hear her voice as she gave me her unique brand of tough love while calming me down and talking some sense into me.
âLook, Laura, Iâm not going to tell you what you did was a great idea.â
I listened to her talk as I toyed with my chopsticks, moving the food around and never lifting any to my mouth.
âButââ there was always a but with Hailey. âAt least you got an amazing orgasm out of it.â
A laugh that sounded like a snort pushed past my funk.
Yep, I got the best orgasm of my life out of it. There was a bright side to this madness. Because as much as it absolutely could not happen again, it had been incredible.
âNow, you must keep showing up as the badass tech bitch they hired. Donât let this ruin all the work youâve done. Thereâs a reason they headhunted you. Just like thereâs a reason you got the job. Do not let this make you forget it.â
She was right.
Moving forward meant business as usual. Even if Tom hadnât made that clear while looking for an escape, I knew it because Iâd been warned about the others who had found themselves in the same situation. It was business as usual for them and would be business as usual for me. I had a lapse in judgment. He wished it hadnât happened, and I would demonstrate that I could play along.
âListen, sweetie. I have to go. Jackson is here to pick me up for a date.â
I frowned, staring at the clock, which read 11 p.m. It dawned on me that it was only eight oâclock in San Francisco.
âHave fun,â I murmured. It was supposed to sound livelier than that, but the words came out flat and defeated.
âAw, honey. Itâs going to be okay. Do your sulking tonight, and tomorrow you walk in there and show him why youâre the best in your field.â
âRight,â I sighed. âTell Jack I said hello.â
Iâd been prepared to take her advice.
