Najir headed to his aunt’s house for their weekly lunch date. Since he had moved back in order to take care of her because her health was failing, he made it his business to take her out often.

Mother Joyce, as she was affectionately called by everyone, wasn’t his real aunt by blood, she was actually his foster mother. He had gone into the system right before his eleventh birthday and was placed with her only a few weeks later. The first day that he walked into her home, he felt nothing but love from her and her late husband Renfroe. They made it their business to make him feel at home and although he missed his mother terribly, he was glad to be with them.

His mother, Antoinette was an awesome mother to him, and even when she fell ill, she did her best to take care of him. He was an only child and they didn’t have any family there, so when she had gone into a coma, no one knew who to contact to come and get him. He didn’t have one of those stories where his mother was either abusive or on drugs, and that was the reason that he landed in a home but by the grace of God, even with being in the system, he never had to bounce around.

Joyce knew how he felt about his mother and she always told him that she was never there to replace his mother, but only to take care of the blessing that God had placed in her life. So when he started calling them Aunt and Uncle instead of Mama and Daddy, they welcomed it. Whatever made him comfortable was their only concern.

Uncle Renfroe was an outstanding man, and stepped in to be that father figure that Najir had never experienced. His father was never involved in his life and the sad part was that he only lived a few blocks over. Never once had he even attempted to come around and for the longest, Najir thought it was his fault. But when he went to live with Aunt Joyce, Renfroe made sure that he made up for all of the lost times.

They had one son that was grown and off on his own, and even with him coming home to visit occasionally, it was as if Najir was the only child that they ever had. The two of them would go to sporting events on the regular and they would even get out in the yard and play catch or wrestle with one another. He may have been an old man but he made sure to not let that slow him down.

With all of the fun things they did, it was the life lessons and the spiritual teachings that he got from his uncle that meant the most. Najir knew that he wouldn’t be the man that he was today, had it not been for that man. The love that he had for God and the things of God, was only because he was taught at an early age.
