Chapter 27

“You shot a cop! That's just great! Do you eat moron cakes for breakfast? If he dies, we'll have every cop in Mecklenburg county looking for us. Do you understand?” Morano swatted Carl hard on the back of his head.

Carl hadn't wanted to meet Morano on this deserted part of the Catawba River. The sounds of the water, which he usually liked, made him nervous. His wouldn't be the first body found floating there. I guess it's better than being road kill for those turkey vultures, he thought. Morano never did a killing himself, but there could be someone else around, maybe hiding in the tall grasses. Every sound in the bushes made Carl jump a little.

“I heard on the news that the cop was going to recover,” Smitty offered hesitantly. He stood some distance from Morano.

“You bastards better hope he does! I can't believe you can't do a simple kidnapping. How hard can it be to grab a dame and throw her in a car and drive away? She's just a dame, for God's sakes. You each outweigh her by at least seventy-five pounds. You afraid of her or something?

“No, of course not! It's … complicated,” offered Carl. He was standing far enough away from Morano to avoid another swat.

“It's complicated? It's complicated?” said Morano in a mocking tone. “There's nothing complicated about getting hold of a dame. You just have to smarten up about where you grab her. You were in front of the CSI lab – what the hell were you thinking?”

“Who knew CSIs had guns? We thought they worked in the labs, you know, with the fingerprints and hair and stuff,” Carl mumbled.

“Some of them do work in labs. You just happened to find one that's a police officer, too. With a gun! How are you going to do anything now, you might be recognized?” Shaking his head as he paced, Morano added, “I need to replace you idiots. You can't get the job done. Suppose someone got the license of your car? You could talk and ‘criminate me. You're a liability.”

Carl knew what that meant. If Morano took them off this job, he'd probably have someone kill him and Smitty. Morano would make sure someone got to them. But as long as they were on the job, they were safe.

“Don't get your steam up, boss. We have a new plan. We'll get the dame, don't worry. We ditched the car and there's no trace back to us. It was stolen months ago.”

“This is it, boys,” Morano fumed. “You have one more chance. I'm getting heat about this. The guy who hired me ain't happy. The lawyer this dame, Kemper, works with stopped that other lawyer, Birley, for being charged with murder. The guys want him charged. I have a professional relationship to maintain, you know. If you don't get it right this time, you're history. You got me?” He was shouting now. “That woman has to be taken off the streets by next week.
