Chapter Fifteen

Gia pulled through the wrought iron gates, with Savannah in the passenger seat and Thor, Klondike, and Pepper in the back. She followed Hunt beneath the canopy of palm trees lining either side of Trevor’s curved driveway. When Hunt stopped, she pulled beside his Jeep and shifted into park. “This really is amazing, even more beautiful than I imagined it would be, since the last time I saw it was in the dark.”

“Can you believe the stonework?” Savannah blew out a breath. “Incredible. Far nicer than any venue I looked at.”

“No kidding.”

In the cobblestone courtyard center stood a large fountain surrounded by a circular garden overflowing with flowers. A stone wall surrounded the property, not only creating the feel of a private oasis but providing an extra layer of security Gia suddenly felt sure they needed.

Trevor held the driver’s side door open for Gia.

“Thank you, Trevor.” She climbed out and let him shut the door behind her.

“No problem.” He started around the car with her. “Is Savannah okay?”

Gia peered in at her through the windshield. “I think so. It’s just a lot to take in. Not that she didn’t realize the person who kidnapped her was still out there, but I think she felt like whoever it was let her go so they wouldn’t come back for her. Now, she has to accept that maybe they only let her go temporarily because they wanted something. She doesn’t like being used as a pawn in a game she doesn’t even understand, and she’s convinced someone’s coming for her.”

Trevor slung an arm around Gia’s shoulders in a companionable embrace. “Try to convince her not to worry about it, at least while she’s here. She’ll be safe, Gia. You both will.”

Gia nodded, still not thoroughly convinced. Though Trevor’s mansion rivaled a fortress, they couldn’t hide there indefinitely. “Thank you, Trevor, for everything. You didn’t have to leave Storm Scoopers and come all the way out here with us.”

“Don’t worry about it.” He opened the passenger side door for Savannah. “Mathew’s been working out great, and he’ll be okay by himself for a little while.”

Savannah climbed out of the car and stood gawking. “Trevor, I don’t even know what to say. There are no words to tell you how thankful I am.”

“Anything for a friend. Now, come on and let’s get you guys settled.” He took the keys from Gia and popped the trunk.

Hunt and Leo each grabbed a couple of bags from the trunk and started toward the house.

“Do you mind if I take a walk around the property once I get these bags inside?” Hunt asked.

“Not at all. Go anywhere you want, and just let me know if you need anything or if you think Gia and Savannah do.” After shutting the trunk, Trevor took the two cat carriers from the back seat.

Gia hooked Thor’s leash to his collar. “Where would you like me to walk him, Trevor?”

He used his elbow to gesture toward the side of the house. “The potty pavilion is around that side.
