Chapter Seven

The Interviews

Mark called down and had his car brought up, he went down and drove to the Sandstone’s mansion; Frank met him and opened the door.

Mark asked, “OK, how is everything?”

Frank smiled, “Stressful; we are planning two funerals, the bank accounts have been frozen, hell, I had to pay for the down payment.”

Mark smiled as he said, “You own the funeral home.”

Frank said, “Rules are rules, I shouldn’t get stuck paying for this, that damn Donny.”

Mark asked, “Are they ready?”

Frank said, “They want to do it together.”

Mark said, “Oh, for Christ’s sake, you know that’s not the way it goes, am I going to have to drag their sorry asses downtown?”

Frank said, “I don’t know what the hell you are playing, but we both know you’re not going downtown with anyone.”

Mark said, “Now, I know that, and you know that, but they don’t know that.” Mark lightly slapped Frank on the shoulder and said, “Let’s just get this over with, and you can plan the funeral.” They walked into Paul’s office, Laura was there and so was Richter, Mark asked, “OK, who goes first, you know as well as I do, we do this one-on-one, if you don’t want to do this here, we can go downtown.”

Laura said, “Oh, hell, I will go first, Jack don’t go far, this shouldn’t take long, he knows most of it anyway.”

Mark opened up his satchel and pulled out a pen, he asked, “OK, where were you the day your husband was killed?”

She said, “You already know I was here with Jack, and Frank is a witness.”

He asked, “Did anyone see Paul leave, was he alone?”

She said, “No, you already asked that, I don’t think anyone saw him leave. He stopped by, gave me a kiss and said he was leaving.”

Mark asked. “Did he have anyone threatening him, did anyone want to see him dead?”

Laura started to cry as she said, “No, everything was calm around here.”

He asked, “So how was your marriage going?”

Laura said, “You probably heard we were headed for divorce, we made up months ago that it was a money thing. I loved my husband, even if we got divorced I would get a million dollars, it was written right in the prenuptial agreement.”

Mark said, “Well, there were no papers filed, so that would be a rumor I say, his C.P.A. died shortly after that is quite the coincidence, have you found the nephews?”

She said, “Now that was something; they both disappeared right after Paul died. I would put money on them being involved.”

Mark said, “It is leaning that way; I think they might be working with Tony Bruno.”

Laura said, “Oh, that ass, Paul and Tony had words, I can’t remember when or what it was about.”

Mark then asked, “Paul’s brother, your brother-in-law, he was also murdered. It looked like someone questioned him, what do the Brunos want to know, it has to do with money. Both of these murders have had their cases closed, I am just trying to solve the Brownburg’s case that is the one I am getting paid to do.
