THIRTEEN

I RAN OUT the front door.

“Look,” Fabe said.

It didn’t take long to see what he was pointing at. For the first time in hours, the snow had slackened. In fact, it was barely coming down at all. On the horizon smoke was drifting upward, losing itself in the gray sky.

“What is it?” I said.

Katie came out from behind me. “It’s the high school!” she said.

She was right. I could see the green roof of the two-story building peeping over the trees. No flames were visible, but a lot of smoke was pouring out of the vents in the roof.

“The instruments!” Katie said. “All the band instruments are gonna get burned up.”

I have to admit, it didn’t seem like the end of the world if my piccolo got melted into a puddle of molten metal. But what occurred to me was that if somebody had set fire to the building, there was probably something there that they didn’t want anybody to find. Some sort of clue that might lead back to the killer.

Katie charged out into the street and began leaping through the powdery snow. I turned and saw Mrs. Krauthammer walking slowly down the stairs, carrying a bunch of clean sheets. “Is Mom going to be okay?” I said.

“The best thing we can do is to leave her right where she is,” Mrs. Krauthammer said. She added, “She’ll be fine with me. Go do what you need to do.” She walked to the mantel, took down an old shotgun. “If anybody comes, I know how to use this.”

“I’ll stay with your mom and Mrs. Krauthammer,” Fabe said. “You go do what you need to do.”

“Okay,” I said, pulling on my coat. I ran out the front door and followed Katie’s footprints in the snow.
