Chapter 7

I called in sick at work, which was professional suicide. It was only my third day, but I just couldn't face the world now. Not when my world was out there, hating me for something I hadn't done.

I forced myself out of bed around noon and refused to check any voicemails or my phone. If Carl had called, I didn’t want to talk to him – not yet. If he hadn't called, I couldn't face that rejection.

After some coffee to wake me up, I laid on the couch, sifting through channels. Around 4 p.m., when my stomach began to ache from emptiness and I still didn't have the urge to stuff a bite in my mouth, I decided to put some survival measures in motion. I called Ellie and told her I needed her.

Twenty minutes later, Ellie arrived at my place. One look at my puffy face and my greasy hair and she went into motion.

“Sit down and I'll make something for you to eat.”

“I can't eat now. I just want to talk.”

“All right.” She disappeared into my bedroom and came back in less than a minute.

We sat quietly on the couch, and as always, Ellie gave me all the time to summon up the energy to talk. “So what happened exactly?”

I stared at the walls, at the TV, at the couch, before staring at my nails. “I thought I had something so special, Ellie.”

Ellie stroked my arm as I struggled to control my tears.

“This girl from work...she hates me, I think. I think she has a crush on the boss. Imagine the maliciousness it took to go to my boyfriend and tell him that I was flirting with the boss.”

“And Carl believed her?”

“He...yes. He got really angry and didn't say a word, just drove really rash and wouldn’t reply. Then he stooped and blamed me for it. He didn’t even ask. He could’ve asked, right? He just exploded on me. How could he not see?” I pleaded to Ellie.

Ellie pursed her lips. “How did he not see what?”

“That I love him.” I broke into tears, and Ellie slid closer, wrapping her arms around me.

“You’re strong, Emily, so strong. You can deal with this. He’ll understand.”

“No.” I pulled back. “I don’t want him to understand. I’m so angry with him for not trusting me. What did I do to deserve being treated like this? I understand that he hates my boss, and that hatred is valid. This isn’t even about me! This is about Carl and Andrew, and I’m getting caught up in the whirlwind.”

“Has he asked you to quit?”

I shook my head, wiping the drying tears off my cheeks. “No. But he did say we’d talk about it later. We didn’t get a chance. We had dinner and then that happened. I took a cab and came home.”

“And he didn’t stop you?”

I looked up at Ellie. The accusation in her eyes made me uneasy because it was for Carl, because he hadn't treated me right. Somehow, that urged me to defend the same man I was mad at.
