Roisinâs obsession with Ronan was worrisome. She seemed fixated on figuring the man out, and Carrick didnât want that much of her attention devoted to another guy. He leaned forward, and careful to avoid touching her scarred side for fear of her shying away, he caressed her unmarred jawline. âLet it go for now, Ro. Youâve had one major thing after another over the last day. Give your mind a break now.â
âYou mean stop thinking about another man,â she said with an arch look.
âThat, too.â He chuckled and pressed a kiss to her lips. âSure, and Iâm the only man you need to obsess over.â
She sandwiched his face between her palms and looked deeply into his eyes. âAnd Iâve obsessed plenty for the last nine months. Jaysus, I missed you, Carrick.â Her voice broke on his name, and she pressed her lips together, blinking rapidly. âI missed moments like these; the two of us at the table after Aeden falls asleep, sitting and drinking tea or sharing a glass of wine. I felt totally lost without you.â
He couldnât speak. All the words he wanted to say, the love he felt but couldnât express, were bottled in his throat behind a thick lump of self-hatred. Instead, he knelt between her legs and buried his head in her chest as she hugged him in a death grip. Tears burned the back of his lids, and he tried his damnedest not to let them fall. Heâd cried buckets since the accident, more than a grown man should.
When he could speak, he drew back and said, âWhen souls were created, ours were carved from one mold, Ro. The Goddess divided it in two, giving one half to you and the other to me. Weâre only whole when weâre together.â
Her love burned fierce as she stared at him, and her fingertips traced the lines of his face as if memorizing each of his features. âYes.â
Releasing a breath he hadnât been aware of holding, Carrick helped her stand and rested his forehead against hers. âWeâre stronger together. You, Aeden, and me. A unit.â He swallowed hard. âNever leave me, Roisin. Iâm not sure I could take it a second time.â
âI thought it was you who didnât want me anymore,â she whispered. âThat I was broken and useless to you. To Aeden.â
âNo! Jaysus! Youâre the glue that keeps us all together. Here, Aeden and I were living half-lives without you.â He tilted her chin up and gently traced her scars. âI canât tell you enough how these donât matter to me, Ro, other than they break my heart because they cause you pain.â
âDo you think Aeden will be okay?â
âHeâs our son. Heâs got your cleverness and steely resolve.â
âAnd your kindness of heart.â
âAnd his own tough little spirit.â
She smiled through her tears. âThen heâll be okay.â
âYeah. I think heâll be okay. Now that we have you back, that is.â And because he couldnât help himself, couldnât go another minute without tasting her love, Carrick kissed her. When she didnât pull away but instead returned his passion, kiss for kiss, he felt lighter.
