Opal returned to work after that.

Billie stepped out onto the sidewalk in front of the townhall and turned to them as they exited. “Well, I have things that I have to do. I leave you to your own.”

Paige didn’t like that. They weren’t on a vacation. They were there to learn something. Otherwise, she needed to go home. Granted, the thing with the roots had been pretty cool. Relieving, even, but not worth the trip to Alaska. Though…that darkness on the horizon might not be something to blink at. “I’d prefer it if we could just get started.”

Billie shook her head. “All in good time.”

“We don’t have time. When are we going to meet the dragon?”

“When he’s ready.”

Ripley held up a hand. The episode with the trees had changed her. Her eyes still glowed a soft silver, and her normally in-your-face attitude was feeling a bit muffled. “Now hold up. We could all probably use a little R&R.”

Paige set her hands on her belly. “Do you see this? This means that we need to hurry up.” Also, there was the darkness. They had to be ready for whatever that was.

“I understand that, but at the same time, what are you gonna learn right now?” Ripley blinked her silver eyes with a sigh. “You haven’t had the opportunity to sit down for longer than five minutes in weeks. I don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but you’re about to have babies. I think you’re gonna want to have at least a little bit of rest time.”

Okay. So maybe she wasn’t as muted as Paige had thought, but her eyes were still silver.

Leslie studied Ripley in concern for a moment then turned to Paige. “She has a point.”

They really didn’t. Sluffing off some of her excess energy into the forest had been a great relief, but she had a bad feeling that DoDO was on their way. She’d been ignoring Billie’s references to them, but she saw the darkness. She was worried. About her sister. About her babies. “I feel fine.”

“I believe you forgot what it’s like to give birth.”

That very well might be true. But… “I still want to hurry this along if we can.”

Billie shrugged. “You can try to force it if you want to, but it ain’t gonna make it go any faster. Just be patient. And trust us. You’re learning things right now. You just don’t realize it.”

“Like what?” Leslie asked frustrated.

It is about damn time. Paige was starting to wonder if her sister was even in her meat suit anymore.

Billie smiled. “You’ll see. The trees are speaking to you if you give them time and listen.” She spun on her heel and walked off. She raised a hand and waved. “Enjoy the town for a little while. When you’re done, you know where we parked the four wheelers.”

Leslie, Ripley, and Paige all stared at each other.

“I say we should go grab a beer…” Ripley looked significantly at Paige’s belly. “Maybe a milkshake instead.”

Leslie spun and slammed her palm into a mailbox.
