And I, of ladies most deject and wretched,
That suck'd the honey of his music vows,
Now see that noble and most sovereign reason,
Like sweet bells jangled, out of tune and harsh;
That unmatch'dform and feature of blown youth
Blasted with ecstasy: O, woe is me,
To have seen what I have seen, see what I see!
Mr. Suiter led the big applause that followed her performance. He complimented her on really understanding Ophelia, who more than anything else, was confused by Hamlet's actions. Talk about confusion! The reason Brenda understood Ophelia's feelings so well was because she was sharing a bathroom with Hamlet Was Dylan crazy? Was she? Brenda really didn't know.
The bell rang, and Mr. Suiter reminded them that at their next meeting David and Donna would perform a scene from Romeo and Juliet.
"Are you guys ready?" he asked.
They smiled, but the smiles looked a little forced. Brenda suspected that one way or the other, whatever David and Donna worked out would be pretty entertaining, if not exactly what Shakespeare had in mind.
On the bus home from school, Brenda practiced how to act with Dylan. She tried a number of approaches; at last she decided to be friendly but a little aloof; anything warmer would certainly lead her into a messy romantic quagmire that she simply was not ready to explore. Sex could lead only to harder stuff.
When she got home and called out to her mother, Dylan answered, "Your mom's out shopping."
Trouble was coming, Brenda knew, but she saw no way to avoid it. To ignore Dylan would be rude if they were the only two people in the house. Besides, she wanted to try out her new attitude. She walked into the living room and Dylan said, "Nobody's here but me and Oprah." He fired the remote and the TV went off. The silence was deadly.
"Can I get you anything?" Brenda asked. "A soda or something?"
Dylan smiled and said, "That would be great. Thanks."
While Brenda walked to the kitchen, Dylan called after her, "Your mom said some sandwiches are on a plate in the fridge."
"Okay."
She found them, grabbed a soda, and was on her way back, when Dylan called, "And an apple, okay?"
"Okay." She took one from the bowl on the dining-room table and walked into the living room feeling a little put upon, which was silly. She'd asked him if she could do anything for him. "Is that it?" She set down the sandwich plate, the apple, and the cold can of soda.
"Maybe that blanket over there." Dylan pointed.
Brenda got it for him from the back of a chair, but she was starting to fume.
"Oh, and I left my book on that table over there."
If he thought she was Nancy Nurse, he was sadly mistaken. With an edge in her voice, Brenda asked, "Does Master Dylan wish anything else?"
"There is one more thing."
"Yes?"
"I want you."
Dylan smiled and the ice that had been forming inside Brenda melted. How could she not love this guy? She had been holding back too long. She ran across the room to his couch of pain and lay across him.
