Pale sunlight entered the cottage as I slowly woke. Van was still sleeping as I stretched to look at him. We hadn’t moved an inch the entire night.

I considered getting up and making breakfast for Van, but the temptation to stay where it was warm won out. Plus the fact that I was curled around Van’s beautiful body helped tip the scales. I closed my eyes and tried to imprint in my memory everything about that morning. How his cheek rested against the top of my head. His fingers laced with mine. How smooth his and firm chest was under my hand, rising and falling with each breath he took.

Perhaps because I was so aware of the soft movement, I was instantly aware when its rhythm changed. I smiled, knowing that he was awake. Nothing was said for an eternity. Van hadn’t moved a millimeter but I could hear his heart thud under my ear. I could bare the silence no longer.

“I know you’re awake,” I whispered. “How long are you going to try to get away with faking sleep?”

He chuckled and kissed the top of my head. “I wasn’t faking anything, just enjoying the moment.” Van stretched his long frame and rolled onto his side. He propped himself up on his elbow and peered down at me. “Good morning.”

“Good morning,” I said, unable to keep my grin from spreading.

“Did you sleep okay?”

“Like the dead.”

“Good.” Van lowered his head and kissed me. “I’m going to wash up and then start breakfast. Any preferences?”

I shook my head.

Van pulled himself out of bed and headed down the stairs. Once he had disappeared from view, I sat up and hugged my knees, surprised at the quietness of my usually overactive mind. I stayed like that until I heard Van opening and closing cupboards in the kitchen.

I crept downstairs with a fresh change of clothes and locked myself in the bathroom. The hot water from the shower worked wonders on my body, undoing the tightest of knots in my back. Unfortunately the hot water didn’t last forever, and I had to get out. I ran a brush through my wet locks and pulled on a simple day dress.

The smell of breakfast wafted through the house as I emerged from the bathroom. The dining room table was covered with food. Toast, eggs, bacon, sausage, cereals, juice, coffee. The sight was incredulous and I was impressed Van had gone to so much trouble.

He gave me that beautiful, lopsided grin that I loved as I walked into the room. “Hope you’re hungry.” Van served an enormous plate with a little bit of everything, but I somehow managed to put it all away. I vowed not to eat again until our Thanksgiving lunch, which might have to put off to Thanksgiving dinner. We both had to lie down for a little while after breakfast. Van had outdone himself.
