I've heard you should eat smaller meals at night and larger meals at lunch. Is this true?
There are many possible reasons why this could be useful when trying to eat healthier and lose weight. It seems to make sense to eat the largest amount of calories while you're still up and around to burn them off. Plus, by doing so, you then eat fewer calories late in the day when you're more sedentary and heading to bed. In addition, we know that people who skip meals or eat very little during the day tend to overeat later in the day and into the evening. It makes sense that a plan to eat more food earlier in the day, possibly even a bigger breakfast, would help a person to avoid overeating at night. Then all those extra, unnecessary calories are not consumed.
There's certainly no harm in eating this way, but you should make sure that this style of eating works well for your lifestyle. See how it makes you feel and if it helps you lose weight. If it does, then great — you've found what works for you. If not, chalk it up to experience and continue trying to find a healthy eating style that works best for you. The two-week menu in the back of this book is designed so that the three main meals of the day are roughly the same size. However, when you break it down, breakfast is the smallest by a bit and dinner is the largest by a bit. Feel free to flip-flop the lunch and dinner choices to see how eating your largest meal midday works for you.
