Jeff started for the barn, but Christie stopped him. âI donât want to go in there,â she said.
âWell, where else are we going to get a rattrap?â Jeff asked.
Christieâs eyes reflected her puzzlement. âWhat do we need a rattrap for?â she asked.
âTo get even with Miss Edna,â he replied, his voice exasperated. âYouâll see. But we need a trap.â
âMaybe in the shed,â Christie suggested.
They crossed the yard and went into the shed near the chicken coop. In the floor there was a trapdoor, and Jeff reached down and pulled it open.
âWow,â he breathed. âWhatâs this?â
âItâs the root cellar,â Christie explained. âAunt Diana says they used to keep vegetables down there. She says they never spoiled down there.â
âItâs like a fort,â Jeff said. âCome on, letâs go down into it.â
Christie looked into the dark cavern doubtfully. âI donât know,â she said. âItâs probâly full of spiders.â
âOr even snakes,â Jeff added, grinning mischievously.
âStop that,â Christie said. âBesides, I thought you wanted to look for a trap.â
Sighing, Jeff kicked the trapdoor shut and began poking through the collection of farm tools that were scattered around the shed. âHereâs one!â he cried. The trap, ancient and rusty, looked to Christie as though it would break if they tried to set it, but when Jeff tested it, it held. He set it on the floor of the shed, then prodded it with the handle of a rake. It snapped closed, its jaw leaving a slight dent in the hardwood.
âNow we need something to cover it with,â Jeff said.
âBut where are we going to put it?â Christie wanted to know.
âWherever Miss Edna might find it,â Jeff replied. âIs there anyplace she goes all the time?â
âI donât know.â Then she thought of something. âHow about the chicken coop? She collects the eggs every morning. Anyway, almost every morning.â
âNeat,â Jeff said. âCome on.â
They left the shed and went into the chicken coop. A few minutes later they came back out again.
âThatâll get her.â Jeffâs voice was more confident than he was. He knew that if his parents found out what heâd done, heâd get a lot more than a lecture from his father. He faced Christie. âYou wonât tell, will you?â he asked.
Christie shook her head.
âCross your heart?â
Christie crossed her heart.
Jeff glanced uneasily at the house, wondering if anyone had seen them go into the coop. It didnât seem like it.
âWhat shall we do now?â Christie asked.
Without thinking, Jeff suggested the first thing that came into his head. âWe could go up to the mine.â
Remembering her father, Christie felt her happy mood slip away. âBy ourselves?â she whispered. âI donât think we should.â In truth, she didnât want to go at all, but she didnât want to admit it to Jeff.
âThen letâs ask my mom and Miss Diana,â Jeff suggested. âMaybe theyâll take us.â
Suddenly the idea was less frightening. With Aunt Diana and Mrs. Crowley along, it might not be so bad.
âOkay. Letâs ask.â
They found Diana sitting by herself at the kitchen table, still sipping coffee. Joyce was nowhere to be seen.
