Chapter Eleven

“Tell me again, what happened to the brick?”

Officer Kristofferson had taken off his suit jacket, loosened his tie, and rolled up his shirtsleeves. He was leaning his hands on the small table in the interview room, staring me straight in the eyes. I had to fight the urge to roll mine as I stared back. The guy obviously more concerned with his image than with finding my mother, and that made me furious.

I sighed. “I told you, I don’t know. Matt and I were in the kitchen drinking tea while we waited for you to get there. When you arrived the brick was gone.”

“And you say you saw traces of blood on the brick?” I could tell from his snide tone that he didn’t believe a word of what I was saying. Part of me wanted to panic, and the other part of me wanted to punch the smug jerk square in the face.

“Yes, Matt saw it too. The blood looked dark, old, like it had been dry for several days.” I repeated the same words that I had for the last three hours. Nothing in my story changed because it was the flat out truth. I knew Matt was going to be saying the same things, too.

“So you are telling me that while the two of you had a tea party someone came back into the house and stole the most valuable piece of evidence in the whole case?” The policeman’s voice cracked, and I could see how mad he was. If this had been a television drama, he would have slammed both fists down on the table for emphasis. As it was, I got the point. But I also knew that he wasn’t mad about the loss of evidence because it slowed things down with bringing my mom home. No, he was pissed that he didn’t have a show piece to trot out to the press, which seemed to be getting thicker by the day.

“I don’t know. That’s the problem, isn’t it? I don’t know what happened. Matt doesn’t know what happened. You don’t know what happened. So I guess at this point we have to go with the most logical explanation, wouldn’t you say?” I chewed the inside of my cheek as I stared at him.

“And what’s that?” he asked.

“That it dematerialized all on its’ own.”

Officer Kristofferson’s eyes flashed, and that time he did bring a fist down on the small table, the metallic thud reverberated through the small room. And despite my earlier thought of him doing it, he surprised me so much that I startled backward in the chair, tipping it precariously, and nearly tumbling to the floor.

“Okay, Miss Smarty Pants, since you seem to know so much about police work, you tell me what we should do next, hmm? That brick, if there ever really was a brick, was our best chance at moving the case forward.” He glowered at me.

Feeling chastised, I said, “I’m sorry. I just really want you to find my mom.
