Chapter 12

"James, this is my friend Sarah," Linda said. He was athletic, in his early forties, dressed in black tango trousers and a crisp, white, long-sleeved shirt. James pulled her gently into a warm embrace.

"Linda told me to keep an eye on you," James said with a wink as he stepped back. "She said you're going to break many hearts soon. Was it easy to find this place?"

"Yes," Sarah replied, glancing quickly at Linda. "Thank you so much for accepting me at such short notice."

"A friend of Linda's is a friend of mine," James said, placing a thin bracelet around her wrist. "This is for you to enter the main venue," he explained, pointing to a door on their right. "Also, please don't tell anyone you decided to join today. We have a waiting list of over a hundred followers. They would be up in arms."

Sarah drew her finger across her lips, mimicking a zipper, and then tossed the imaginary key over her shoulder.

"Now, Linda mentioned this is your first marathon. I'm honored to be your first host. Do you have any questions I can answer?"

Where is Diego? Sarah thought. She smiled. "For starters, what exactly is a marathon?"

James laughed, his eyes twinkling with passion. "It's where tango dreams come true," he said, his voice reminiscent of a magician telling a story. "Guys, I'll be inside for a while. We have an important guest here." He then turned to Sarah and offered his elbow. Sarah looked at Linda, who nodded encouragingly. She looped her arm through his, feeling like a million bucks.

"What a gentleman," she remarked.

"Every lady deserves a gentleman," he replied smoothly, and they walked into the main venue.

Sarah's mouth dropped open. "Wow, this place is huge," she exclaimed. Oversized white balloons hung from the ceiling, hovering above the dance floor. Their hues ranged from bold, passionate reds to deep purples. The warm glow of festival lights reflected off their surfaces, casting a kaleidoscope of colors throughout the venue. Below this vibrant display, hundreds of tango dancers moved gracefully, their silhouettes illuminated by the balloons' glow. As she took in the scene, Sarah began searching the crowd. Where is Diego?

Chairs and tables surrounded the dance floor. The chairs were elegant and cushioned, and the tables were covered with pristine white tablecloths. Drinks, light refreshments, and a selection of snacks and dried fruits were available. Groups of people gathered around the tables, their laughter and animated conversations creating a delightful hum. Every so often, a man would approach a table, and a smiling woman would stand up, ready to dance. Where is he?

"Come with me, this way," James guided Sarah through the crowd with care.

At the far end of the venue, Sarah noticed the DJ's stand, elevated slightly for visibility. It hosted a sleek console. The DJ, a tall man in his fifties, had a collection of vinyl records behind him, neatly organized. A projected image revealed his name as Gaston. He took out a record and placed its case in front of the console for everyone to see.
