CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

FIVE YEARS AGO

Andy sat in the moving van in front of their Birchwood Harbor apartment, watching as the taillights of the taxi Kate got into diminished before him. Tears ran down his cheeks in silence as he put the van into drive and slowly pulled away from the curb. Connecting his phone to the holder on the dash, the robotic voice in the map app told him where his next turn would be. He felt like he was in a fog, his mind trying to fathom what had just transpired while also grieving the loss of his grandmother. They had been very close, and he couldn’t believe he had missed telling her a final goodbye as soon as he left the small town of Forest Creek. The thought of that was going to pull at his heart forever.

He never wanted to break up with Kate. It wasn’t his intention at all that morning. The further they drove from their hometown, the more he yearned to return. He had picked this moment in time to reveal his true feelings about moving out of frustration and pain. He was sick to his stomach about what had just happened; she was the love of his life, but he felt like he had just ruined it forever. He couldn’t take back the words he said to her. He knew she would never truly forgive him, even if he apologized. It wasn’t only Kate’s idea to move; he had wanted to as well; he just didn’t realize how he would feel once they had actually left.

With his brain elsewhere, the drive back to Forest Creek seemed to fly by. Before he realized it, he was passing the green and white welcome sign and entering the town. He dropped off the van at the rental company and walked the six blocks to his parent’s house. Standing on the front lawn of the split-level home, he felt relief washing over him. He was heartbroken about leaving Kate, but simultaneously, he was over the moon to be back home.

As he walked in the front door, his mother greeted him with a tear-stained face and swollen eyes. She ran to him and wrapped her arms around him in a tight embrace. “Where is Kate?”

Her words flooded his soul, and he fell to his knees, weeping into his hands as they covered his face. “We broke up. I left her there.”

“You what? Honey, why did you break up? What happened?” his mother spoke quickly while trying to help him up from his knees.

With a fast ramble, he replied, “I didn’t want to be there, Mom. And I didn’t want Kate to give up her dream. I knew if I told her the truth, she would leave too and miss out on this opportunity she had dreamed about. The words just came out, and I can’t take them back.”

“Oh, honey. I’m so sorry,” his mother, Marcia, said, trying to console him.

“It’s okay. We have other things to worry about right now.
