The next morning, the answer was no clearer, but she had faith that He would show her the answer when He was ready.
The day was slow, and Presley found herself whipping out her cell phone between customers to check for a message from Brandon, but it was always empty.
After the lunch rush, she took out a rag and began wiping down the tables. The bell jingled and Joy rushed in.
âPresley, did you hear? Daddyâs coming back tonight.â
âSorry, she just had to tell you,â Anna said, shaking her head.
âThatâs okay,â Presley said to Anna before turning her attention to Joy, who was patting her hip excitedly. âNo, I hadnât heard, but I didnât get to talk to your daddy last night. That is good news though.â Why hadnât he left a message telling her that? The thought sent tiny tendrils of doubt into her heart.
âHe said heâd be home tonight. Youâll come, wonât you?â
âOf course I will.â Though Presley wondered if the reason he hadnât told her he was coming home was because he didnât want her there. Joy hugged her legs before dashing over to the pastry case and pressing her nose and hands against the freshly wiped glass.
âDinner will be at seven,â Anna said. âWill that give you enough time?â
âYeah, it gives me plenty of time.â Presley had tried staying open later than six in case people wanted dessert after dinner, but very few people had shown up. So, she had left closing hours at six, which gave her some time to unwind in the evenings.
âGreat, weâll see you then. We have to go expend some energy.â Anna nodded at Joy, who was tapping at the glass as if trying to convince the pastries to come out. âCome on, Joy. Letâs let Presley get back to work.â
Joy smiled and waved as she bounded out of the shop, and Presley returned to wiping tables. She had just finished re-wiping the glass case when the bell sounded again and Paula sauntered in, a black knit dress clinging to her large frame. A white fur coat covered most of her top half.
âWell, hello Paula, what can I get for you today?â
Her bright red lips pursed as she perused the offerings in the case. âIâll have that.â She pointed an equally red fingernail at a mini chocolate pie, and Presley bent down to snag it from the case. âWhere is that handsome man of yours?â she asked, peering behind the counter as if she hoped to find him stashed back there.
âHe had to take a trip back to his job, but heâll be back soon.â Presley placed the pie in a little brown box and closed the flaps.
âItâs not another woman, is it?â Her voice was low and conspiratorial as if they were sharing a secret. Presley didnât bite.
âNo, just work, Paula. Here you go. That will be two fifty.â
She handed over the money, looking disappointed that Presley had no gossip to share with her. After a final look toward the back of the shop, she rolled her eyes and left.
