Macho and in charge
“The hardest thing about being a teen guy is feeling like you always have to impress people when you really don’t.”
—Justin, 18
Almost every girl has thought to herself, “Why do guys always show off and try to act so macho?” In fact, this was one of the most asked questions on the surveys that students filled out for this book. Sometimes the wording was a little different…“Why do guys try to act so tough? Why do guys think they’re all that? Why do guys always have to be the best? Why do guys always want to be in charge?”
All of those questions mean the same thing. In the words of Ally, a junior in high school, “A guy starts to have a nice conversation with you when you’re alone, but as soon as you add some friends into the equation, he gets all rude and once again starts ignoring you because he has to be the bomb.”
Ah, yes. The Bomb. The Man. The Guy.
Honestly, girls, guys don’t even realize they do this. As you keep reading, you’re going to realize that so much of what you might consider “guy behavior” is interrelated and connected. For example, guys have a naturally competitive attitude. Their relationship groups have a “top dog,” or leader. Those two things cause some guys to act macho in order to be seen as successful and powerful. It’s true that acting successful and powerful isn’t the same as being successful and powerful, but guys—and girls—often do things to create a public image that seems desirable.
