Chapter 14
I TOOK what Peter and Noel said about being normal to heart and decided, basically, fuck it. When I went to get my hair cut the following week, I walked into the salon and said, “Let’s do something different.”
I’d had the same dumb haircut, more or less, since high school. It was fairly traditional: short in the back, a little longer on top, the bits hanging over my forehead the only nod to style.
I usually got my hair cut at a salon in Amherst by one of the younger stylists who was technically still training, but when you got the same haircut that more than half the men in America got, it was not a great challenge to the stylist. When I told her I wanted her to get creative, she seemed to relish the opportunity. When the clippers came out, I almost bolted, but I let her do what she would. I walked out of the salon with the sides of my head shaved, super short hair in the back, and long spiky locks that fell over my eyes.
I loved it.
I drove back to the dorms because I needed to grab my violin before my evening rehearsal. I must have caught Peter right before his postgym shower, because he was wearing only warm-up pants and was furiously wiping his face with a towel. Thus he didn’t see me when I came in, and merely grunted a hey.
“Hey. I got a haircut.”
“Oh yeah?” Peter picked his head up and looked at me. “Whoa. That’s… hot.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. I really like it. Can I touch your head?”
Considering some other places his hands had been, I was surprised he felt the need to ask. “Yeah. Of course.”
He walked over and cupped his hand around the side of my head. He rubbed gently and wrinkled his nose. “Softer than I would have expected. Definitely a sexy haircut, though.”
“You like it?”
“Yes.” He leaned over and dropped a quick kiss on my lips. “You look amazing. With your dark hair, it’s kind of gothy and dangerous.”
I grabbed him by the shoulders and pulled him close so I could kiss him properly.
He stepped away gently. “I’m fresh from the gym. I must smell pretty ripe.”
“I like it.”
“Sure. You would. But I really want a shower, and I know you have rehearsal.” He held up a finger. “But I was thinking. I still owe you dinner.”
“Huh?”
He rubbed the side of my head again. “I promised you dinner in exchange for chauffeuring me around campus when I was injured. And since you’re kind of my boyfriend now, I thought maybe we could go somewhere a little fancy.”
“You think I’m your boyfriend.”
He frowned. “Are you not?”
I hadn’t really given it a lot of thought prior to that moment, but I liked the idea of him being my boyfriend. I smiled. “I am.”
He smiled back. “Good.”
“But we already went to dinner that one time.”
“We’re not limited to one date, Logan. Look, Dave is hooking me up with the employee discount for that fancy Italian place in Northampton.
