87 Won’t skipping meals help me cut back on calories and lose weight?

No. Eating all your calories in one or two big meals can send your blood-sugar levels sky-high. Eating smaller meals more often keeps the amount of carbohydrates entering your system small and consistent, so your glucose level stays within your target range. This can keep your weight under control, and you’ll need less insulin.

When to eat depends on many factors, particularly on the type of diabetes medication you use. If you take insulin, skipping meals can result in dangerous hypoglycemia, and can make you hungrier, moody, and unable to focus. This may lead to overeating later in the day. Breakfast-skippers are particularly at risk for grabbing sugary, high-fat foods later in the day. Always eat within a few hours of getting up.

Your metabolism slows down when you do not eat. Eating regularly keeps your energy level high and helps your body burn calories. Eating more often doesn’t mean that you eat more calories. See a registered dietitian (RD) to learn how to spread your calories throughout the day. You may find that three meals and three snacks work well for you!
