Some in a hole with baskets and with baggs,

Not everyone, however, found such mines to be an “honest, worthy, harmelesse hell.” Given that in 1661 Evelyn had already drawn attention to the sooty, sulfurous plumes emerging from industrial smokestacks, it is perhaps not surprising that just a few years later Milton, whose vision of Hell is paved in “firm brimstone,” has a sulfur-filled hill spewing out thick smoke in Paradise Lost:
