I felt her presence before I saw her.

Dayne.

Strengthen the wards. I sent my thoughts to the Popids in hopes they could protect the village. I knew my responsibility would be to draw Dayne away from the area. I could not let her see the waterfall if the wards and charms were to weaken.

I turned away from the hidden entrance to the village and headed toward the park.

Dayne quickened her pace and cut me off.

“Rhône, hi. Didn’t expect to see you here.”

Funny, you followed me here, why wouldn’t you expect to see me?

“Dayne, nice to see you,” I lied.

“You live around here?” Dayne stood with her arms crossed, a frown distorting her face.

“Just thought I’d come enjoy the park for a while,” I evaded her question.

“You don’t deserve him, you know that, right?”

“Kellan isn’t a prize to be won. He’s free to make his choice of partner, and for now, he’s chosen me.” I took a deep breath, pulling strength from Mother Earth as I ran my thumb over the muscovite crystal in my pocket.

“You’re some sort of freak of nature, some paranormal creature. I just know it. Kellan went on and on about seeing someone at a waterfall and hidden cave. I thought he was trippin’, but I bet it was you. He swore the disappearing waterfall was around here, right in this area.” Dayne narrowed her eyes as she studied me, watching for anything that would give her information.

Oh, my sweet Kellan. He would be so upset if he realized trusting his friend put the village in danger.

“He only ever talked about the mystery person and waterfall that one time, but I’d swear on my next fix that it was you he meant, and the precious waterfall is around here somewhere.”

“I’m unclear as to what you’re speaking of. But I should really be going.” I tried to sidestep Dayne.

Her hand shot out and yanked my arm, hard.

I winced and bit back a cry of pain.

Kellan. I’m in trouble. I need to protect the village, but I’m worried Dayne is out to harm me, the Popids, everything.

Would Kellan be able to hear me? I truly believed he had the ability, but we’d not yet worked to perfectly hone his skills.

“Please unhand me,” I demanded through gritted teeth.

“You disgust me. You’re a freak. People like you shouldn’t be allowed to exist.” Dayne let go of my arm with a strong push, and I nearly fell backward. “What’s your power? Aside from having two holes and a cock for some kinky sex, what’s so special about you? What did you do to Kellan to hook him?”

“Dayne, I am an intersex individual. That is all. Kellan is attracted to me all on his own. I’d like to end this conversation now.” Again, I tried to leave.

“Don’t think so, freak. Here’s the deal. I’ve got a super powerful boss who wants information about you, your people—assuming you’re not the only freak living behind some invisible waterfall—and your home. My boss also wants you as far away from Kellan as possible.
