CHAPTER 5
Sarah
I felt my heart racing as I walked back down the hallway. Rob was waiting outside of his father’s door. He looked stressed and worried. The look didn’t suit him, yet it seemed right at home on his face. It’s as though he’d spent many years perfecting the look. I walked up to him and wrapped my arm around his waist. It’s something I’d never done before to him, but it felt right. My arm seemed to fall into the slope of his back perfectly, as though I’ve been designed to fit him.
“I think I’m ready,” I said, but I wasn’t really sure if I was telling the truth.
Rob nodded, but didn’t say anything to me. I watched as he swallowed hard and then pushed open the door. I took a step closer to the door and then I felt his hand wrap around me, so that he could pull me into the room behind him.
“Father this is Sarah,” he said in a stiff voice that reflected the discomfort he was clearly feeling.
“Ah, Sarah,” his father said with a smile that held no warmth. “I’m sorry if I ask you a lot of questions, my dear, but I’ve heard nothing about you until today,” he said with a glint in his eyes. He watched for my reaction.
I didn’t react. I just spoke. “Well, I’m sure by the end of it all you’ll be sick of hearing about me.” I held his eyes when I’d finished speaking. “I’m not surprised you haven’t heard anything about me, though,” I added with a sly smile. “I mean your son and I haven’t even made anything official yet.”
“Well, I can tell that he likes you.”
“I hope that he does.”
“Can you give me and Sarah a moment alone? I’d like to speak to her in private,” he said to Rob.
Rob looked at me, as though he was checking that it was all right. I nodded without saying anything.
“Sure, I’ll be right outside if you either of you need me,” Rob said, but he was looking directly at me, as he spoke.
I smiled at him, so that he knew that I was all right, but I could tell from the look in his eyes that he didn’t believe the smile. I turned my attention back to his father, but listened to his footsteps until the closing door blocked them from my ears.
“What would you like to tell me?” I asked him, as I walked closer to the bed so that he wouldn’t have to strain to speak.
He gave me with a cold hard look. “I want you to know that you’re not good enough. I know your type and it doesn’t belong with my only son. I want you to leave this hospital and I want you to leave Rob. I don’t want to make this harder on either of you than it has to be. I can tell that you both have a lot of love for each other, but it’s not going to work.
