Some researchers believe that certain people are predisposed to heroism.16 Alternatively, other researchers suggest that a person’s decision to engage in a heroic action can be a product of a number of variables. These variables include an individual’s sense of empathy and compassion toward others, trauma history, core values, a personal sense of responsibility, and the specifics of a given situation.17 Some of the hosts such as Teddy are created to become heroic.26 On the other hand, others hosts such as Bernard become heroic over time. Once Bernard realizes that he is a host, he works to help other hosts, much as Arnold does before he dies.27
