CHAPTER NINETEEN
Sunday â 14:10
By the time we passed the Trafford Centre Iâd updated Kate on Helen Porsonâs âTales of the Unexpectedâ. Kate listened but didnât say much. Her focus appeared to be on the traffic, but I knew she was storing. As the traffic eased and she got into her driving rhythm, the download began.
âSo she saved the best âtil last?â
âThe son?â
Kate glanced and nodded. âIf you hadnât picked up on the connection she wouldnât have said anything.â
I laughed, though not in a good way. âYeah. Itâs getting to be a family trait.â
âBeing evasive?â
âShifty, anyway.â
âYou donât believe her?â
âMostly, I do. And you have to make allowances. A dead twin and a death wish from Jimmy C â bound to mess with anyoneâs mind.â
âEven so,â said Kate, as she steered the car between lanes, âsounds flaky to me.â
She had a point. The same thing had been on my mind since leaving Flixton Grange. âYes and no. I put her on the spot. She had to weigh up quickly what to tell me. Or more to the point, what not to tell me.â
âSo she conveniently left out any mention of Robert? Or that sheâd arranged for Elaine to see him as a surprise?â
âIt makes sense in a demented kind of way. She gambled I didnât know about the fabulous Nkongo boys. Thereâs no way she could have known Iâd already been up close and personal with them. Or about the attack on Clegg. The cops havenât gone public on it yet â Bob says theyâre giving themselves until Monday. Whatever her reasons, she decided to leave the Nkongos out of her story. She probably assumed theyâd left town.â
âBut she knew they were going to her house that day. It must have crossed her mind if they turned up?â
âAfterwards, maybe. But having seen Jimmy C bolt from the house, then discovering a dead Elaine, I donât think those two were the first thing on her mind.â
âAnd later?â
âShe probably thought sheâd missed them.â
Kate checked her mirrors while making a sound that suggested the contrary. âBut wouldnât she have been concerned about them coming back when she was contriving her great escape?â
I turned up my hands. âI didnât ask her, I didnât think of it.â
âAnd when she did the whole Out of Africa production youâd think sheâd have mentioned the son then?â
My driver didnât want to let this one drop, but I thought it through again and shook my head. âNot necessarily. She didnât know about Robert until she got the letter. And she thought it was a scam at first. Thatâs what she said to Clegg. I think thatâs what he came to tell me that night at the flat.â The memory of his warm corpse pressing down on me elicited a shudder, but Kate didnât notice. I went on processing out loud. âI think Helen churned out the original story as sheâd always told it.â At that point I nodded, but more to convince myself than Kate. âAnyway, a prodigal African son is one family secret sheâd want staying that way.
