Chapter Twelve
Finn was halfway through his fifth shot of tequila and wondering if he should switch to something more serious when Cabot found him. Finn was sitting at one of the tables that had been abandoned by guests eager to move closer to the dancing. In fact, he was so far from the stage, he was pretty sure his table was actually on the neighbor’s property. Which was fine by him. If he could have left the party altogether, he would’ve done so about two hours ago. But, he knew Mia wanted him here. He knew it was important to her. And he just didn’t have it in him to break her heart.
So instead, he had spent the past two hours moving farther and farther away from the dance floor and doing shot after shot.
He wasn’t straight-up drunk. He wouldn’t have risked embarrassing Mia by doing that. But he was keeping just enough of a buzz to stave off the urge to punch someone. In particular, to punch someone who had his hands all over Willa’s ass at the moment.
He was about to do his sixth shot when Cabot walked over, pulled out the chair beside him, and sat down.
“It’s a good party,” Cabot said dryly. “Thanks for inviting me.”
Finn eyed his best friend. “I thought you came as Mariely’s plus one.”
Cabot shrugged. “Technically. Yeah, I guess. But you still invited me.”
Finn raised his glass in toast. “Glad you’re having fun.”
“Yeah. Thanks.” Cabot leaned back in his chair, stretching his legs out in front of him. “The question is: why aren’t you having fun?”
“Who says I’m not?” Finn gestured with the nearly-empty glass, making an expansive gesture to indicate the party that lay before him. “Great music. Great food. What’s not to love?”
“I don’t know. You tell me. It is a great party. And you look fucking miserable.”
“Yeah, well, I can think of about a hundred places I’d rather be than here.”
“I’m guessing none of those places have a view of Willa dancing with Damien.”
Finn shot his friend a look. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Just that you’ve obviously got a thing for Willa, and—”
“I don’t.”
Cabot ignored him. “And it’s obviously killing you to watch her with that douche bag.”
Before Finn could protest any more, Dahlia appeared out of nowhere and slid into the chair on his other side.
“Douche bag?” she asked. She took the glass from Finn’s hand and downed the last of his drink. “So, we’re talking about Damien?”
Okay, so he may not be as drunk as he wanted to be, but he was too damn buzzed to put up with them double teaming him.
“Look,” he began. “I don’t give a fuck whether or not Damien’s a douche. It’s not my business.”
“Of course it’s your business,” Dahlia quipped. “He’s dating Willa. The girl you’re obviously flipped out over.”
“I’m not…” He struggled to find the word and he didn’t think it was the alcohol impeding his vocabulary here. Flipped out didn’t seem like the right term. It was too…surface. Too much about him.
