“He pushed you into the swimming pool?” Kim grabbed my shoulders.

Esther threw a damp bath towel over my head.

“I don’t know. I’m not sure.” I grunted as Esther began rubbing my face with the towel. She had run upstairs and snatched the bath towel from her apartment. It smelled like a wet cat. “Seriously, Esther, are you trying to completely erase my face?” I pushed the towel away. “I don’t know. I’ve thought about it and thought about it.”

Did I fall or was I pushed?

“One thing I do know for sure is that Vail got mad when I asked him a few relatively harmless questions and pointed a knife at me. MC seemed to get just as riled. And maybe tried to drown me.”

“In a six foot deep swimming pool? Really, Amy, that’s ridiculous. Don’t you think you’re letting your imagination get the best of you?”

“Is it ridiculous? I told MC I didn’t know how to swim.” I sneezed hard and rubbed my nose with the side of my index finger. “I know one thing. I’m done with this murder business.”

“Good.” Kim handed me a tissue. “The whole idea of playing detective is dumb. And dangerous.”

“I agree,” offered Esther. “You’re definitely not cut out for the work.”

I was in no mood to argue. “I’m going to go see Gloria Bolan and tell her what I’ve learned. Maybe she can get the police to take her seriously. When I told Jerry about my run in with Vail, he didn’t take me seriously at all.”

“No surprise there,” quipped Kim “From class clown to chief of police. Who could have predicted that?”

“And that’s it. After that, I’m done.” I waved my hands. “Time to focus on me.”

“And your wedding,” Kim added.

“Right.”

“Yeah,” quipped Esther. “It might be a good idea to try to stay alive until Saturday.”

“I have every intention of doing so.”

“Speaking of which,” began Kim, after studying her watch. “You’d better go upstairs and shower. Better yet, take a hot bubble bath,” she suggested. “The guys will be by shortly to pick up Paul and head off to the Biltmore.”

“Yeah,” cackled Esther. “You don’t want lover boy to see you looking like this, do you?”

“No. You’re right.” I ran up the three flights of steps and ran a hot bath.

I fell asleep in the tub with my head resting on a folded towel and my feet dangling over the side. The radio played softly in the background.

The banging on the apartment door roused me. I picked my cell phone off the tile floor and checked the time. “Yikes.” It was late. Derek was waiting for me at the door to say goodbye.

I wrapped a bath towel around me and flew to the door. “Derek!”

“Hi, Amy.” Strong arms folded around me and lifted me off the ground.

“Alex?”

Alexander Bean kissed me solidly on the cheek. “Surprised to see me?”

“Yes. Very.” My face heated up and my heart skipped a beat.

Alex lowered me slowly to the ground. My towel slipped dangerously, if not lewdly. I hastily refastened it up under my armpits.
