11.

A glance at my watch sent another jolt through me. 2:00 AM already.

When Aubrey and I stepped outside Snyder & Associates, Philadelphia was dark and quiet. We had no car now, and Aubrey didn’t want to take a cab and create a potential witness, so we walked to a diner that was open twenty-four hours a day, found a booth in a corner, and went over the plan, looking at it from every angle.

It was ludicrous. Insane. Completely immoral.

Just like Aubrey.

When dawn finally broke across the Philly skyline visible through the diner’s plate glass windows, the place started to fill up. Just seeing other people—normal people, grabbing a bite to eat on their way to their jobs—was a relief. We ordered omelets and fresh coffee. The rich aroma had a calming effect on me. I tried to enjoy it because I knew it wouldn’t last long.

Aubrey couldn’t allow me even a brief respite. Before I’d finished half of my breakfast, she pushed my mobile phone across the table to me. “It’s time.”

“What makes you think she’ll even be available?” I said. “She might have plans.”

Aubrey shrugged. “Then you make her change them.”

I sighed and called Jessie Black’s mobile number, which she’d shared with me as a professional courtesy the first time we were adversaries in a trial. It rang once, twice, and I thought for sure it would go to voicemail. It was barely six in the morning. She was probably asleep. I hoped she was.

“This is Jessica Black.” The voice on the phone was loud, crisp, and very much awake. Shit.

“Hi, Jessie. It’s Dylan Wood. Sorry to disturb you so early in the morning.”

“That’s okay.” I heard a gurgle as she drank something, probably her own morning coffee. I’d never met a lawyer who wasn’t a caffeine junkie. “Is this about the Robinson trial?”

“Not exactly. I mean, sort of.” I launched into the bullshit story Aubrey and I had cooked up. “Listen, obviously I’m disappointed about the verdict. But I was really impressed by you. I was hoping we could grab some breakfast and ... I don’t know ... talk shop. I’d love to pick your brain.” And your fingerprints, I thought grimly, with a glance at Aubrey.

“You mean today? I was planning on getting some work done this morning. It always seems like there’s a mountain of neglected matters that I need to catch up on after a trial ends.”

“I totally understand.”

“We’ll do it another time,” Jessie said.

Aubrey’s stare felt like a weight pressing down on my chest. “Well, except, I’ve got a vacation planned,” I said. I blurted the words just to keep her from hanging up. “And I’d really like to talk to you before I leave, while the trial is still fresh in my mind. Maybe we could just meet for a few minutes? I’ll buy you a cup of coffee.”

Jessie was silent for a few seconds, and I had to check my phone’s screen to make sure she hadn’t disconnected. Then her voice came back.
