Chapter Nine
Things were tense as they settled back into their camp. Annie and Henry were too polite to each other. Henry stood guard while Will and Annie started a cooking fire. They set Clarence, still tied up, near the fire to keep him warm. He’d gone quiet and still and sad as they reached the camp. Annie stood watch while Henry and Will set up the tents in the falling darkness.
Will pulled their tent out of the rocks and carried it over, next to Annie’s, figuring it would be more secure since they were expecting a posse to run them down tonight, but Henry shook his head, took the bundle of canvas out of Will’s arms, and carried it to the other side of the clearing. It was only a difference of about fifteen feet farther away than they had been last night, but Will felt the warmth starting in his stomach. They finished setting the tent up quickly, the practiced movements coming easily, even in the dark. Henry grabbed Will and tugged him behind the tent, out of view of the fire, and kissed him, sweet and deep. Will sighed and pulled back a little ways, but Henry gripped the back of his neck and brought their lips back together so hard that their teeth clacked. Will panted while Henry ran his hands into Will’s hair and tugged it tight before finally letting him go, licking his lips hungrily as he did.
“Why are there always too many people around when I want to be inside you?” he asked him.
Will groaned and set their foreheads together, sucking in a careful breath that didn’t quite mask the sound of Will’s stomach growling. They laughed, weakly and distractedly.
“Come on. Let’s get you and Books fed and make sure Annie’s up for taking the first watch.”
“Why do you keep calling him Books?” Will asked.
“You can’t call a man ‘Clarence’. You just can’t,” Henry replied grimly, taking a step back toward the fire. Will stepped in front of him, knotted their hands together and pressed one more kiss to Henry’s lips before letting go and returning to the center of camp. He almost didn’t care if he ate right now. He wanted the day to end, and he wanted to end it in Henry’s arms. But his stomach was rumbling too, and if they did have to run in the middle of the night he wanted to have some strength left to run with.
Will and Henry settled down across from him. Henry pulled a few potatoes out of one of the saddlebags to start cutting up for dinner. Clarence coughed. They looked up at him over the fire.
“Ahem…might I… might I be untied for a moment?”
“Too dangerous to have you running around our camp. We’ve got guns and horses that we can’t have you taking off with,” Henry told him. But it sounded to Will like he was teasing. The bank teller didn’t seem capable of any sort of violence against any of them,
