It wasnât until they were a good distance away from the hut that Wambleeska broached the subject. âWhat you did back there couldâve gotten us killed,â he hissed.
âHe wanted to scare us by telling us about the messenger. If I hadnât reacted the way I did, he wouldâve most definitely killed us.â Tyler could feel a headache coming on. It was difficult for him to explain the reason behind his actions. He wasnât sure what had made him so daring. Once again, he glanced at the bracelet and felt a shudder run through him.
âEverything okay?â asked Michelle.
âI just feel cold. Itâs chilly out here,â said Tyler.
âHopefully, Ian has lit the fire,â said Michelle. She looked away as soon as she realized her mistake. There was no guarantee that theyâd find Ian back at their teepee. He might have already left the village.
Tyler pictured him mounting his horse and setting off on the trail leading toward the pedestal. He would be back in Wyoming by tomorrow morning while Tyler competed in the battles in Makha. Back at the hut, heâd felt confident about participating. Walking alongside the others, he didnât feel quite so sure that heâd succeed. He shuddered to think of what might happen if he didnât win.
The confidence that heâd felt back in the hut had long evaporated, and now he wondered dejectedly whether heâd achieved anything at all. Thinking about the ritual made him even more depressed. What would happen? He wasnât prepared, and the more he thought about what heâd done at the hut, the more he felt like heâd made an awful mistake.
As they wound their way through the village, John fell back, matching Tylerâs pace.
âI wanted to thank you for what you did. You saved Laura. If it wasnât for you, the chief wouldâve made her compete in the challenges even though sheâs so frail. She wouldâve collapsed in the first round.â
âShe wonât be safe until we get her out of here.â
John nodded his head grimly. âWe need to come up with a plan.â
They were on the outskirts of the village and could see their teepees in the distance. Tylerâs eyes darted toward the horses, where he could just make out their silhouettes. His heart sank when he realized one was missing. So Ian had really decided to leave. Tyler could feel himself growing more depressed as they neared the teepees and there was no fire burning.
âHeâs gone,â said John. âI didnât think he would leave. I thought heâd stay by my side until the end.â
Wambleeska patted Johnâs shoulder. âWeâll manage without him.â
As John and Michelle went inside their teepees to rest, Wambleeska turned to Tyler. âThe ritual will start tomorrow morning,â he said. âWe should sneak back into the village to see what the tribesmen really think about the chief.â
Tyler touched his forehead and squeezed his eyes shut. His head was throbbing. When he opened his eyes, Wambleeska was looking at him with his brows furrowed.
âAre you alright? Youâve been acting a little strange lately.
