Hand in hand, we walk down the wide hallway, passing guests dressed in the finest apparel. Gowns of silver and gold and silk and chiffon are everywhere, and men in tuxedos look dashing.

Have I entered the American royal realm—is there such a thing?

Scott leads me to the ladies’ room where I lock myself in the handicapped stall and get cleaned up.

Once I’m finished, I head back outside and we make our way to the ballroom. Many more people have arrived and are lining up at the bar and are whirling around on the dance floor. My gaze skims the dance floor. Huh. Suzy’s dancing with Spencer, her emerald dress flaring as she spins. He whispers something into her ear and she gasps in delight as he pulls her in dangerously close.

Is there something going on between them?

Scarlett sits at a table with Michael, and they’re sipping on cocktails, looking displeased with one another. She must still be brewing over the fact that he had to be late. How happy is she in her marriage? I wonder. She rarely talks about their relationship to me anymore, and her silence is a little unsettling.

Then I recall the mischievous smile she gave Spencer earlier. “Do you think it was Scarlett who set up this chance meeting between us?” I ask Scott.

“It was actually my sister’s idea that I apply for the residency here,” he replies.

“Really?” Perhaps my assumption about Scarlett’s involvement was wrong. But Christie set it up? That’s odd. Either it’s a really huge coincidence, or there’s some random connection between his sister and Dr. Jamison or Portland Memorial Hospital. “You don’t think Christie set this up, do you?”

“Not sure how she could have managed that. But if it was her, she’ll never admit to it.”

We stand arm in arm and watch the dancers for a while. Wetness starts to trickle down the insides of my thighs. Still watching the dancers, I lean over to Scott and whisper, “Even though I cleaned up, apparently I missed some.”

He exhales slowly. His eyes darken several notches. “It’s so fucking hot that we’re standing here like a normal couple, and that no one in here knows we just fucked in the library. Twice.”

Oh, God. My insides shudder with need. “And no one knows that I wish I were back in there again with you on top of me, thrusting that cock of yours into my very wet pussy.”

I look over at Scott, and give him my most innocent smile.

He’s watching me, lips parted, wanting eyes. “We should get out of here,” he says.

“Don’t you have an important interview in the morning? I wouldn’t want to keep you up,” I say.

“Don’t you worry about that. I’ll be fine.”

I nod, imperceptibly. “I would like that. A lot. I just don’t think it would be very considerate of me to just ditch my friends.”

“Well, how about a dance then?” He offers me a hand.

I beam at him. “I’d love to.”

After I have danced so much my feet are seriously killing me, we sit down at Scarlett and Michael’s table.
