CHAPTER 10
âPlease continue,â she said.
âUh, yeah, Otto took me to the large tank in the back of the room. The touch tank,â I began.
âThe what?â
âUh, it looks like a touch tank from an aquarium,â I began.
âShe is talking about the lake table, headmistress,â Professor Cannon said.
âI see,â Armstrong said, and offered me a reassuring smile. âThen what?â
âHe wanted me to call my magic to control the water, but I didnât know how.â
âBut you did it, didnât you?â Professor Cannon said.
âI guess I did, for a little while,â I murmured.
I didnât much care for her angry glances, but anytime my ire roused, more warmth spread through me from the place the headmistress held my hand. I settled down once more. My mind wandered, and I found myself thinking about the events that brought me there, to the Academy.
The Milagros family curse weighed heavily over my head, and I wondered if Headmistress Armstrong could do anything about it.
Did they know the legends of la Llorona here?
Could the headmistress stop the angry spirit from stealing my soul?
The weeping woman had damned generation after generation of the women in my family. Cursing us to roam the wasteland between worlds to do her bidding, stealing children, and crying rivers for our own selfishness.
âRio? Where did you go just then, I wonder?â Armstrong asked.
âWhat?â I asked, blinking slowly.
I felt drowsy and sad. All I wanted was to close my eyes and just sleep the rest of the day away.
Sleep, little one.
Then you will weep.
Weep for me!
âNo!â I gasped, sitting up straight.
The voice of la Llorona was growing more and more clear each time I heard her whispering in my brain.
Shit.
I shook my head and covered my face with my hands. Despair and terror warred with each other for dominance inside me as I tried to catch my breath.
âRio,â Headmistress Armstrongâs voice got my attention.
Without her holding my hand, I felt as if a fog was being lifted from my eyes.
Fucking hell.
What had the older witch done to me?
âWhat was that?â I asked.
âJust my way of helping you stay calm, Rio,â she said.
âWell, I donât fucking like it. No,â I said, pulling my hands away when she went to reach for them again.
âAlright, but you have to talk to me, then,â she said.
âAbout what? I told you I donât know how I did it. And I canât remember the chant I used.â
âA chant? You want us to believe a mere chant allowed you to create a whirlpool using all the water in the room, Ms. Milagros? You created a spell to weaponize one of the most powerful elements in any world!â Professor Cannon yelled, and I could see in her eyes she was afraid.
âI didnât mean to,â I said, struggling for words. âIt was fine until you hit me.â
âIt wasnât fine! You destroyed school property. The pipes burst from the walls! You were leeching water from the students in the classroom! Three are in the infirmary with severe dehydration because of you ââ
âBut I didnât mean to do any of that!â
âEnough!â The headmistress interrupted.
