Chapter Thirteen

Jasper

I pulled into the driveway and cut the engine with a sigh.

That woman is going to be the death of me.

Blowing out a breath, I rose from the car, idly bouncing the keys in my hand as I walked up the short path to the front door. Flowers in full bloom lined the beds on either side of the porch, greeting me as they turned their faces toward the sun.

They always seem livelier on Gran’s better days.

The thought stopped me cold.

The plants in the garden, in the kitchen. Gran having a good day. Nora confiding in me that she believed she was a witch.

No. It’s not possible. Witchcraft doesn’t exist outside of movies.

…Does it?

Brow tightening, I pushed open the door and strode inside. “Gran?”

“In here, Jaspy.”

I followed the sound of her voice into the kitchen. She turned from the phone on the wall, a smile on her face as she greeted me. Her movements were fluid, easy. Not a trace of pain on her face.

She was having a good day. If I didn’t know any better, I wouldn’t have thought she was sick at all.

“Did you get Nora to Louisa’s alright? You were gone a while.” She shot me a knowing smile, and I felt my ears heat.

“Yeah, I did.” Rubbing at the back of my neck, I inhaled deeply and moved toward her.

Once in the kitchen, I paused and pressed my hands against the island countertop. “Gran, we need to talk.”

Her dark brows shot up, eyes widening in surprise. “Of course, Jaspy. Is everything okay?”

I chuckled ruefully and shook my head. “I don’t know.”

Moving around the island, she patted my hand, giving it a squeeze, her voice soft, with just a touch of concern. “Come on, let’s sit in the living room. It’ll be more comfortable in there.” Her eyes searched mine before she stepped away, leaving me to trail behind her.

My mind spun. Was I really about to have this conversation? My stomach tightened in anticipation. It felt like I was outside of myself, as if the world had been holding its breath, just waiting for me to get here.

Lowering down onto the couch, I rested my elbows on my knees, rubbing my palms together as I tried to slow my racing mind. Memories flooded through me, images flashing by so fast I almost couldn’t focus on them. Gran singing to her plants as she watered them, the both of us elbow deep in potting soil. Her winking at me as she told me she had a way with plants. The way her flowers and garden always seemed to just grow better.

‘It’s good soil, Jaspy.’

But why would our soil be any different?

More images flashed by. Dandelion puffs popping up in a circle around me as Gran sat near, a sly smile on her lips as I squealed and grabbed for each one, making wishes to my heart’s content.

My pulse became a soft rush in my ears as another memory struck. This one hazier, older.

Walking down a long hallway, hearing someone screaming.
