Chapter Sixteen

Ring! Ring! Ring!

Diamond picked up each pillow she didn’t occupy hoping to locate her ringing cell phone, finally catching it on the last ring. “Hello.” She croaked, giving away that whoever was calling had interrupted her beauty sleep.

“Hey, Baby Girl, did I wake you?” The unmistakable baritone of Daddy Frank’s voice caused her to sit up in her sleepy haze. She hadn’t talked to him in a while and if anybody was going to be waking her up, she didn’t mind that it was him.

“No, I’m up.” She yawned, stretching her arms over her head one at a time. “Hey, Daddy Frank, what’s going on?”

“I should be the one asking you, how come I haven’t talked to my favorite girl all summer? You done got too grown for an old man?”

“Absolutely not. I...um” she searched for an excuse that would sound reasonable enough to satisfy his question but nothing came to mind. She wouldn’t dare tell him the whole truth because it didn’t paint her in the best light. Hey Daddy Frank, I sat around all this time waiting on the nigga you told me I couldn’t depend on in the first place to come around. He did everything you said he would and I would’ve been assed out if you didn’t force me to get my own apartment. That’s why I haven’t reached out. Naw she couldn’t be that honest. Daddy Frank was more understanding and easier to talk to than Mama but she was still hesitant to spill her business to her father figure. Diamond had no desire to disappoint him either. “I’ve just been trying to figure out life. Nothing too much.” Diamond replied with more energy than she’d given anybody else recently. Her days of sadness were diminishing as she found a new hobby that kept her pleasantly satisfied. She was growing, discovering new things she loved about herself while magnifying what she loved already. Occasionally, Danger would send threatening text messages but that would be over as soon as she finished talking to her favorite guy. The next time he called he would be listening to “the number you are trying to reach is no longer in service.” Danger’s possessive ass only cared about her seeing someone else. He hated that he lost his influence over her and tried anything to get it back.

“You got to be up to something since I haven’t seen or heard from you in a couple of weeks.” He’d been busy running his very successful landscaping business and hadn’t reached out either. He was aware that something wasn’t right from the bits and pieces he heard around the house and figured it was time to check on his girl for himself.

“I'm sorry for not coming home. I thought I would have the time of my life hanging with my friends and doing things over the summer. Sadly, it didn’t go as planned.” She gave him the generic version.

“Well at any point you could’ve come back. If your plans deviated in any way you should’ve called and said something.
