Twenty Four
The cab seemed determined to send her colliding into Jamie with every turn. In part because he was speeding, probably trying to get them home before they ruined his upholstery. Meg couldn't blame him. Every moment that passed seemed to nudge the night's drink closer and closer to her throat. Well, I did say I wanted to puke.
Being this intoxicated had seemed like the best answer in her car. Do something for herself? Fine, she'd experience something new. Being utterly toasted. Except now the foolishness of that decision was almost as awful as the physical ramifications.
Another hard right turn and she slid into Jamie, having to reach across her best friend to brace herself on the window. Jamie's thick, warm frame was pleasant to run into. It felt solid when Meg's world was in discord. Instead of pushing away, Meg took it as the sign it was and sighed into Jamie's chest, resting her spinning head on breasts she often forgot were there.
It wasn't that Jamie wasn't a woman. But Meg had spent a long time making careful, conscious efforts to distinguish Jamie from Shane. It wouldn't have done to accidentally call one by the other's name in conversation. Even worse would have been to let attraction bleed from one sibling to the other. Therefore she'd forced her mind think of Jamie as Jamie. Best friend. Unattainable. Not sexual.
The comforting weight of Jamie's arm settled over her shoulders. "You gonna make it?"
"I hope so."
"Me too," the cab driver chimed in. Meg bit down her laugh, afraid of adding more motion of any kind to the ride. "Fortunately for me and you ladies we're here."
Here being Meg's house. The front porch light was on but the inside empty. The windows were dark, shuttered eyes that felt like accusations. "Stay with me tonight, Jamie. You can sleep on the couch, or I'll take the couch. But don't make me face this alone."
Meg wasn't sure which this she was referring to. It didn't matter, really. She listened to the wet, raspy inhalations she was making and the steady thump of Jamie's heart.
"Yeah, okay."
That was that.
She fumbled her way up, allowing Jamie to open the door without both of them spilling onto the sidewalk. Meg paid the cab driver and went to the dark, looming figure Jamie cut on the sidewalk. So much like Shane. So different, too. In good ways, she decided.
I wish I'd kissed her first.
The thought crept in and was almost dismissed. But thoughts like that are insipid and they will not fade once freed. Shane had kissed Meg all those many years ago and she'd let the joy of feeling wanted dictate the rest of her life. Meg had fallen into a safe pattern, one that allowed her to have it all. An easy, loving relationship that was never questioned by neighbors. Children and a house. An American fucking dream that she'd adopted without ever letting herself decide what Meg's dreams were.
She took Jamie's arm and they stumbled, half-supporting and half-disrupting each other as they made their way to the front door.
