Chapter Seventeen

Ten minutes later, Leander landed gracefully at the top of the hill behind the small ranch house Raven used to share with her grandfather. The dwarf goats bleated in their pen, greeting the morning with every other animal on Lomberdoon’s farms, homesteads, and ranches.

Raven leapt off her dragon’s back, patted his shoulder, and hurried down the hill toward the house. “I won’t be long.”

“I know.” He stretched his wings and paced. “You couldn’t slow down if you tried.”

“Not today.” Grinning, she raced toward the screen door of the covered porch and threw it open. She was already through the heavy wooden door beyond when the screen creaked and slapped shut behind her. As she hurried through the small house, she searched frantically for anything that might be remotely worth taking with her on a trip like this.

I already have his journals and should probably pack the one with all those spells in it.

She barreled into Connor’s room and stared at the untouched mess he’d left when he’d stolen away in the night that felt like forever ago. There’s nothing important left in here.

A quick leap across the narrow hall at the back of the house took her to her room, and she paused. I guess I didn’t clean up very well in here either.

“Nothing. Really?” With an irritated sigh, she spun out of her room and moved quickly down the hallway again until she emerged in the main living area. “There’s nothing at our house even remotely useful for journeying all over the kingdom on a retired dragon rider’s quest. How is that even—”

Her boot knocked against something leaning against the half-wall they used as a kitchen counter. Leather scraped against wood and the worn, hardened scabbard toppled in front of her. Raven stopped, looked at it, and grinned. “Yes.”

She picked up the heavy scabbard strung onto a thick leather belt and wrapped her hand around the hilt of the short sword inside to draw it out. The ring of hardened steel as it met the air again gave her goosebumps. Connor Alby’s sword shimmered in the low morning light that spilled through the open windows. She chuckled, her eyes wide.

“Last time I used this, I fought elves out of the goat pen. He told me not to leave the house without it. I might as well listen this time.”

It took her less than a minute to strap the belt around her waist with the scabbard hanging at her left hip. The young mage took a deep breath and nodded. That’s more like it. Too bad we couldn’t bring our weapons to school.

She grasped the hilt again and started to draw the sword and test the way the scabbard hung at her waist. The screen door creaked open, and she jammed the blade in before she placed both hands on her hips. The edge of the hilt knocked her left hand away, and she fiddled to readjust the belt as Deacon stepped across the porch and stopped in the open doorway.
