Chapter Twenty-One

Fowler Academy buzzed with excitement, anxiety, and a barely concealed tension when the week of the final exams arrived. The students had one exam for a given class each day, with four hours in the morning to focus only on one set before the rest of the day was theirs to do whatever they wanted.

The first day, they took the exam for Professor Bixby’s History of Magic class, which was nothing more than writing papers for her about the importance of magic and a mage’s responsibility in the world. “If you think you know which discipline you’ll be most interested in pursuing,” the professor told them in her squeaky voice and gestured at them, “go ahead and weave that in. I want to see what each of you thinks you’re capable of before I encourage you further to pursue your interests.”

Raven finally wrote about the Order of War Mages, using what she’d read in the journals as a reference but of course, without any mention of the secrets she’d found there. She added her own experiences during her first year as a mage student to support her claim that becoming a war mage would, in fact, be the best discipline for her to pursue.

Not to mention the fact that it’s in my blood, isn’t it?

When the professor dismissed them, her hand was so cramped from four hours of writing that she struggled to lift her satchel and slip the straps over her shoulders. Her friends met her in the hall, and they followed the stream of students toward the great hall for lunch.

“That was brutal.” Henry ran a hand through his hair and grimaced. “I didn’t even get to finish.”

Murphy smirked at him. “But you at least finished the last sentence, right?”

He shrugged. “Kind of.”

“I don’t understand why she made such a big deal out of weaving in our favorite discipline.” Bella tossed her hair over her shoulder. “We haven’t had a chance to explore any of them anyway. And it’s not like our first assignments after graduation are guaranteed to reflect what we studied.”

“Really?” Raven studied her aching hand and shook it to get the blood pumping again.

“Yeah. Fair enough, the best mages in the graduating class get the best assignments right out of school. But who knows? The best assignments might be boring in comparison to what was filled the year before.”

“I can’t think about any of that right now.” Murphy sighed heavily. “And it’s three years from now, anyway.”

“It’s still kind of fun to think about, though, right?”

They wandered into the great hall and lined up behind the other students to move down the rows of banquet tables and pile their plates with the best food Fowler Academy had to offer.

“Okay, so simply for fun.” Raven folded her arms and nodded at her companions. “If you guys had to choose a discipline, what would it be?”

“Well, I wrote about becoming an Augurer Mage,” Murphy said and glanced at Fritz who sat patiently at her feet.

Raven burst out laughing.
