Chapter Twenty-Three

When their last class before the spring break ended, the first-year students lost all sense of control where they gathered outside the stables and the barn. Leander’s wings twitched outward, and he stepped back quickly with a snort as the field echoed with shouts of triumph, laughter, and friendly jests that exploded from Raven’s classmates.

“Woah.” She laughed and watched the chaos. Rory Davidian and Mike Jeder collided with each other in their eagerness to snatch up their satchels from against the stable wall.

“Watch it, Rory!”

“Dude, your head’s like a rock.”

They both grimaced and rubbed their heads, but the minor setback didn’t stop them from clapping each other on the back as they walked toward the stone archway, still laughing.

“Henry! You comin’?” Rory turned to gesture for Henry to join them.

“Yeah, yeah! Just a sec. Don’t start that new rain spell without me.”

“It’s only conjuring a little water.”

“Whatever. I gotta see it with my own eyes.” He pointed at his friends in warning, then jogged toward Raven. Maxwell hopped quickly behind him and kept up fairly easily.

She patted Leander’s shoulder and left him safely beyond the whirlwind of students who raced to retrieve their packs and leave the school grounds for nine days of freedom. “So what are you gonna do first now that the spring break’s officially started?”

Henry ran a hand through his disheveled hair and glanced toward the main courtyard. “First, I’m gonna watch Mike totally mess that spell up.”

“I’m not sure anything you do on the grounds counts as the start of break.”

“It does for me, Alby. He’s been telling people all week that he tweaked it a little to make it awesome.”

“Uh-oh.” She glanced at the other two boys who disappeared under the stone archway. “Didn’t Gilliam already give him a warning about tweaking?”

“Yep. You heard Rory, though. Mike’s head’s like a rock.” He wrinkled his nose and glanced at Maxwell. The toad didn’t move at all when Murphy and Fritz joined their little circle.

“That was a crazy class.” The brown-haired mage exhaled a heavy sigh and shook her head. “I thought Fritz was gonna claw my face for sending him around the stables.”

“Not from behind the stables.”

Murphy met Raven’s gaze and folded her arms. “No. Once he came back. How far did you and Maxwell get?”

“It’s hard to tell.” Henry shrugged. “I tried to get him to come say hi to you and your dragon, Alby. He got halfway there before Rory’s owl flew over him and bam, the toad hops right back into my arms. Now I’m starting to wonder how all this stuff Worley teaches us works.”

“With practice,” Raven suggested with a little chuckle.

“Yeah, ha, ha. Okay, we learned to help them overcome their natural instincts before we started this today, right? I thought that was some kinda building block, you know? You cover that and it’s locked into place and you level up to the next thing.”

“You gotta expand your mind, Derks.” she said and when the two girls met each other’s gazes, neither one of them could hold back a little laugh.
