Chapter Nine

“Is she gone?”

Cade looked up from the stack of documents that had been delivered just after dinner. Barbara was wearing the same unreadable look she’d had all through the early part of the evening.

“Jess is on her way back to Helena and I’ve called my former in-laws and threatened them if they don’t keep closer tabs on that girl.” He tossed the red pen he’d been using onto the desk and rubbed his strained eyes. “It’s worse than I thought.”

“You could say that,” Barbara agreed wryly. “Did she tell you?”

Letting out a breath, he looked with disgust at the bank records Seth had gotten for him. “I didn’t talk to anyone at the bank. Not that I need to. Dale was skimming from the cartel account for years.”

Her expression seemed to soften as she came around the desk and peered over his shoulder. He could hear the faint, soothing sounds of each breath as she silently reviewed the copies. “This was going on for five years?” she asked.

He nodded through the thick blanket of betrayal. “I’ve been cross-referencing the cartel accounts with Dale’s personal account and he was transferring cartel money to himself. Then on the fifteenth of every month, he wrote a check to Montana Rentals.”

“Maybe there’s some explanation, Cade. Dale might’ve had a reason for paying that company by personal check rather than a cartel check.”

He looked up into her soft blue eyes. “Montana Rentals is a small business center between Jasper and Helena. They rent post-office boxes and sell money orders.” He watched and waited as she absorbed the meaning of his statement. “I called and inquired. All they would tell me is that Dale was a customer.”

“I’m sure Dalton can—”

“Already called him,” Cade said. “He told me he’ll work on it through legal channels, but it could take a while. He said something about an out-of-state warrant.”

She offered an encouraging smile. “I’m sure it isn’t great to learn that your friend was stealing, but you may have found the clue that will lead to solving his murder.”

“The Charleston M.E. is releasing his body tomorrow.” Cade blew out a breath. “How am I supposed to deliver his eulogy when I’ve just found out he’s been screwing us all over for years? If he was having money problems, why didn’t he come to me? I would’ve helped him out.”

He closed his eyes but only for an instant. They flew open when he felt the brush of her body against his. The chair squeaked slightly as she wriggled between him and the desk. Her hands rested on his shoulders and Cade was afraid to move. He was more afraid not to.

“You may never get the answers you want,” she said softly. “Keep your focus on the Dale you knew, not the one you never met.”

As if it was the most natural thing in the world, Cade slipped his arms around her tiny waist, lacing his fingers at the small of her back. “Right now, I’d like to forget about this whole mess.
