Chapter Eighteen

"The first thing about being a cowboy," Scott began later that day, a cigarette hanging from his lips, "is knowing how to ride a horse."

"I know how to ride a horse," Riley told him, her tone flat. Her eyes took in sight of the particular horse the couple was in front of, and it was only then she realized that this horse wasn't quite like any horse she had ever ridden before. It was bigger, sturdier, and there was just something about her eyes...

Scott was watching Riley's facial expression with sharp eyes and his lips curled up into a knowing smile as she studied Thunderbird. "Yeah, well, I'm sure you've never ridden anything quite like Thunder, here," he murmured. He then took a long drag of his cigarette before reaching out and running his fingers up and down the horse.

Riley could tell that the horse meant quite a bit to him by the way he interacted with her, and Riley couldn't help the gooey feeling spreading through her body. It was always a heart-warming sight, at least in her mind, to see a man who was good to animals, cared for them, didn't mistreat them. For someone as tough and as criminal as Scott was, the sight revealed his true character, despite the different adjectives that described him. It was nice to see that he wasn't as bad as people believed him to be, even though she always had a feeling that deep down, he was a good man.

"Is she your horse?" Riley asked, wanting to learn more about the animal's history with him.

Scott nodded, squinting his eyes so he could take in Riley. "I've had her for the past five years," he told the woman. "Owner thought she was the runt of the litter and was trying to find her a home or put her down. I already had a horse at that point, and really, I had no intention of raising another – not when I'm running for my life. But there was just something about her, something about those eyes. She took the decision away from me and made it herself. My old horse is with Eric and I have Thunder. Everything worked out, but things normally do."

"They do, don't they?" Riley asked before quickly glancing back at the horse, narrowly avoiding Scott's stare. "Do you think she'll let me ride her?"

"We'll find out," he told her with a smirk. "Now, bein' a cowboy means none of this sidesaddle nonsense. You gotta ride the horse like a man rides the horse. Although ..." His voice trailed off and he blatantly looked at Riley up and down, taking in her attire. "Although it might be difficult for you in that dress of yours. You don't mind showin' some leg, do you?"

Riley had no idea how to respond to such an inquiry, but apparently, the fact that her face had gotten quite red was response enough. She had no idea how Scott did this. Before meeting him, she
