Chapter Nine

The owls hooted as we settled on the logs around the camp fire. Several people were gathered nearby, chattering amongst themselves. As soon as we'd arrived, the twins had joined us, their serious expressions still stuck to their handsome faces. I wasn't sure I'd even heard the second twin, Trent, talk. His broodiness made him mysterious.

How had such a big group of people managed to survive without an alpha? It was clear that Fender was a founding member and often looked upon as a leader. And yet, he claimed that everyone was equal.

“Tammy said she would meet us here,” Fender said, kicking his knee irritatingly.

I shuffled away slightly, too annoyed by him to reply. He had insisted that a few of the brothers join us to hear what Tammy had to say about my pack. Although I’d tried to refuse, I was in his domain, I couldn’t exactly enforce anything.

Joel was still at the club, too busy serving up chocolate fountains. Jeez, the guys sure were a contradiction.

“She's a regular to the camp, then?” I asked him, clenching my fists under my thighs to stem the flush of angry heat.

Of course she was a regular to the camp, how else could she have betrayed me so easily? This motley crew were her friends, apparently. Not that I could speak, I'd spent my last week cavorting with the very people I'd been accused of sleeping with. If Alini could see me now, she would disapprove.

“She feels like an outsider in your pack.” Shrugging, Fender glanced at me sideways. “Everyone who feels out of place is welcome here. Including you.”

“Out of place?” I scoffed, trying not to laugh.

His nonchalant expression flamed the growing heat of ire in my stomach. I rubbed my waist, trying to ease the knot that had formed. Fender's gaze dipped and I froze, licking my lips at the memory of where his fingers had not long been.

“Tammy!” Tristan greeted, getting up from where he'd been crouching to stoke the fire.

The night was black and the stars shone brightly above our heads. The smell of the trees crept up my nose, inviting me to run. My wolf spirit longed to stretch her legs and feel the brush of wind against her fur. Alas, I couldn't very well go gallivanting when there was important news to hear.

“Hi, Tristan.” Tammy was breathless, but a smile blossomed.

Oh, so Joel had been right. Tammy had a hard on for Tristan. That wasn't going to end well if she wanted to stay in my pack. A shudder shook me and I ducked my gaze, ashamed of my hypocrisy. Still... Fender was just an enjoyable distraction until I was back in the bosom of my pack. I was an alpha-heir, I couldn't get serious about a rogue werewolf who was turning out to be quite honourable. The bastard.

“Violet,” Tammy said, looking around. “Did you want to talk privately?”

Good, she’d respected me enough to check what I wanted. Fender might think that he had a right to know everything, but he couldn’t exactly argue with me now.
