If Samuel hadn’t had to stop and give Carl Branson an update, he would’ve been with his men and none of this would’ve happened. Instead, he stood on the road, staring at the carnage left behind.

He turned to the guy on his right. “Call this in. We need this mess cleaned up before anyone sees it.” Which was a miracle no one had so far. They might’ve been on a backroad, but sooner or later someone would drive by and call this in to the local sheriff.

The guy—whatever his name was—nodded and went back to the Hummer to make the call.

Samuel cursed. He’d been against Mr. Branson sending him extra men. Samuel didn’t like working with people he didn’t know. If this had been his team, the subjects would’ve been captured and the deaths could’ve been avoided.

When two men stumbled from the woods, Samuel aimed his gun, ready to fire, until he noticed the emblem on their shirtsleeves. They were some of the idiots Branson had sent him. “What the hell happened here?” he demanded.

The two appeared shaken. They stared bug-eyed at Samuel but didn’t open their mouths.

“I asked you a fucking question!”

“Dragon,” one of them muttered. “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it was a dragon.”

Samuel shot them both. He turned to the guy who’d made the call. “Let’s move out. They couldn’t have gotten far.”

The guy visibly swallowed, and he nodded. “The cleanup team will be here soon.”

Samuel didn’t need easily shaken men on his team. “Then stay here and keep this area secured.”

The guy looked relieved. That was the last time he would agree to Mr. Branson’s help. Samuel did just fine with his own men. Where Mr. Branson had found these guys was anyone’s guess.

He made a circle with his index finger, and his team rolled out, leaving the useless extras behind.
