CHAPTER 11

Isettled back onto the plush sofa in my apartment, letting out a long, weary sigh as I sank into the cushions. With Janet Crofton safely behind bars, at least one weight had been lifted from my shoulders. She wasn’t talking, but revenge for losing her role was the obvious motive. I’m sure the answers would come out eventually, especially when her lawyers turned up.

I had a few hours until I met with Piper, and I was already so exhausted from the last two days I needed a quick minute just to catch my breath.

As I gazed around my cozy living room, my eyes fell on the framed photo of Rosemary, Piper, and me from our last girls’ trip to the beach. A pang of worry twisted in my gut as I thought about my cousin, trapped somewhere in the depths of that woolen nightmare she’d inadvertently created.

“We’ll get you out, Rosemary,” I said to the photo.

The sound of Delilah’s ghostly form materializing beside me pulled me from my thoughts. “You look like you could use a stiff drink, dear,” she remarked, her translucent brow furrowed with concern.

I managed a half-hearted smile. “You know me too well, Aunt Delilah.”

“Trouble in paradise?” she asked knowingly, drifting over to the armchair across from me.

I rolled my eyes, but there was no real heat behind the gesture. “Something like that.” I proceeded to fill her in on the latest developments, from Janet’s arrest to our impending expedition into Rosemary’s knitting-gone-wild disaster zone.

Delilah listened intently, nodding along as I spoke. “Well, at least you’ve got a solid plan in place,” she said once I’d finished. “And with Piper and that strapping young man of yours by your side, I’m sure you’ll have Rosemary out of there in no time.”

“Here’s hoping,” I muttered.

A mischievous glint shimmered in her eye, “How are things going with you and Hunter these days?”

“Well, the wedding is on the cards, but we haven’t made any concrete plans yet.”

“You know, when I got married, it was a massive event. The whole town came. There was a parade right along the main street.”

“I had no idea you were married,” I confessed.

“Three times, in fact. At first, I thought it was the men that were wrong, but it took me a few attempts to realize I’m the problem.” She looked around the room and added. “Don’t ever let my exes hear that.”

I chuckled. “What happened?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. Before marriage, the relationship was fine, but as soon as a ring goes on these fingers, I seem to lose my mind. Jealous, controlling. I’m really much better off at being single. Still. A keeper getting married… that’s usually a big event.”

“It’s not going to be,” I said dismissively. I had no intention of inviting the entire town to our wedding. That wasn’t for me at all. No, thank you. “It will be a small event with close friends and family.”

“No fun!” Delilah said with a knowing wink. “No, I don’t blame you, darling. It’s more trouble than it’s worth.
