Chapter

The Golden Retriever sat down.

Greg gave him a piece of cheese which he gobbled up happily. Greg set three balls into the bowl on the right, and put two balls in the bowl on the left. The dog sat there watching him carefully. He was aware of the woman behind them.

He kept his attention on the man in front of him like a good dog. He liked the man. He did not, however, like the woman who sat watching them scribbling things into a notebook. She smelled strange, like bleach and ammonia.

“Now, boy, I need you to tell me which bowl has three balls?” Greg said showing the golden retriever three of his fingers.

The dog eyed the two bowls for a moment then he got to his feet taking the few steps across the floor. He laid down in front of the bowl on the right. He gave a single bark.

His man looked pleased.

“Good boy,” Greg said, giving him another piece of cheese. He ruffled the dog's ears. The dog enjoyed that thoroughly.

“This is the only second generation to survive, correct?” Dr. Bennett asked.

Greg nodded.

Susan closed the distance between them. “He does this every time?” she asked for clarification.

“Thirty, out of thirty. I think he's ready,” Greg said, his voice brimming with pride, petting him absentmindedly.

“What about healing rate?”

“Elevated. It surpasses Subjects 214, and 713. However, nothing like 17.”

“Very well start the trial.” Susan turned and just before she left the room, paused. “Make sure to get DNA samples, record each of the tests,” Susan said.

“Have you given any more thought to what we discussed?”

Susan sighed. She looked tired, dark bags around her eyes, her cheeks gaunt. He was seriously worried about her.

“All or nothing,” Susan said with a sad smile.

Greg was beginning to think that was the closest thing to a real smile she had.

“All right.”

There was no more arguing with her. So Greg let it go. She knew the consequences. He spelled them out for her often enough.
