He paused at the window, taking in the hamburger joint across the street, all those people eating their thick burgers, french fries; drinking their Cokes. He wished he could take a chance with the cash he had left and buy a hamburger. Only there was no way of telling that he had the job and instead of buying a hamburger, he might have to buy something that cost less and would last a lot longer. Rice. He would get a bag of rice later, rice and maybe a stick of butter or a bottle of catchup.

He stepped into the tiny closet-like space, opened the mini refrigerator. The two carrots were still there, the two hot dogs. The nearly empty jar of pickle relish.

I’ll have one of the hot dogs for lunch when I get back, he thought. And maybe buy a soft drink to wash it down with.

He closed the refrigerator door, reached for his sunglasses, put them on and went outside. He walked to the high-rise on Wilshire. The sun was hot on his face. The sweat poured. His hands remained dug inside the pockets of his army jacket.

The beautiful women were everywhere in their high heels and sexy dresses, and not one looked at him. They didn’t have to. He knew the score. Losers you can smell a mile away. But he couldn’t help it, he wondered what if one, just one were to wrap her arms around him, only one, and told him how much she loved him, that she was so proud of him, to have someone like him… one woman to take to a movie or the park… but he knew he was dreaming.

It’s a dream, Frank Blair. Things like that don’t happen to guys like you. Forget it.
