P.S. Three months after the official end of the program, Meg recorded an additional 1 3/4-pound weight loss and shaved another ½ inch off her figure despite having surgery a few weeks before the follow-up weigh-in, for a grand total of 12¼ pounds and 10 inches lost in 5 months.

CHAPTER 7

Eating

FOR WEIGHT LOSSO AND EXERCISE

STUDY AFTER STUDY HAS SHOWN THAT YOU CAN LOSE more weight by cutting calories from what you eat than you can by burning them off with exercise. That's why I had to include a diet component with the WOW program. I want to give you every advantage to slim down and shape up as quickly as possible—and to keep the pounds and inches off long-term. And to be perfectly honest, most of us will benefit in many ways—such as having more energy, boosting our immunity, and protecting ourselves against disease—from making some changes to our diets.

One of the reasons dieting trumps exercise for weight loss is that it's just too easy to eat back the calories you work off. Your body needs fuel to exercise, and the source of that fuel is food. That's why some people report feeling hungrier when they start to work out. It's also why elite athletes require hundreds, even thousands, more calories a day than the average person (you may have heard about Olympian Michael Phelps's 12,000-calorie-a-day diet). If you're trying to lose weight, this could be counterproductive—unless you find the right balance.
