Raine
Fun like how?” I questioned.
“Well my Elites, we’re about to show you one of your new gifts,” he raised his hand and the blue glow shone from his palm as Austin’s turned a bright white.
“Daniel, you take Kale and I’ll go with Raine,” Austin suggested.
“Will you now?” Daniel smirked and I watched as Austin’s brow furrowed.
“You realize they don’t know how to do this yet, so yes I’ll go with Raine,” he grunted at his partner.
Daniel’s face turned serious as he nodded once more at his companion. I peeked up at Kale; something was bothering him about this match-up as he threw daggers at Austin’s turned back.
“Stay close to me Raine, at all times, okay? Keep one arm on me and don’t let go. The moment you do, you won’t be invisible anymore.” Austin directed, pulling my vision back to him and away from my frustrated partner.
“Will do. Where do you want me to place my hand?” I inquired, as I watched Daniel and Kale begin to walk, his hand on Daniel’s shoulder. That wouldn’t work for me though, seeing as Austin was a giant compared to my slight frame. Austin picked up my hand and entwined my fingers with his. I blushed up at him, his smile and piercing sapphire blue eyes causing my stomach to do somersaults.
“Let’s go,” Austin turned and began to lead me down the alleyway at rapid speed to catch up with Daniel and Kale.
I got my head back in the game and pushed my confused feelings out of my mind. It was not the time to be crushing on your former mentor.
As we stepped out onto the main street, I expected people to run past us in a frantic rush, shocked at seeing us, maybe raising the alarm to let others know we were here. Considering I could see us all, I expected others to as well. Nevertheless, as we walked together through the grimy streets, not one person batted an eyelash.
I looked around and my heart shattered; the city was filthy. Buildings crumbled and a brown fungus trailed its way over the brickwork and concrete. The streets were wet and damp with a putrid stench of rot and urine. We passed small, broken-down houses with dirty sheets as front doors and despondent women huddled inside or against walls. It was gut wrenching. Everyone we passed looked worn and tired, as if they had just given up the fight. I wanted to reach out to them, to tell them everything was okay because we came to save them all. But truth was I was unsure. I had no idea why we were in the Lost City. All I knew was we were going to defend the gates. Yet, here I was inside the walls and it was nothing like I had expected.
Austin turned the corner and nearly pulled my arm out of its socket; my mind was so occupied, I hadn’t even been watching where we were going. Wedged between another two large concrete buildings, we all halted.
