The current project emerges from the American Archaeological Mission, directed by Professor Donald White, which conducted excavations at the Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone and a wider survey of remains in the Wadi Bel Gadir (see Figure 7.1). The results of their work, undertaken between 1969 and 1981, were published in Libya Antiqua and the American Journal of Archaeology between 1971 and 1977 and, from 1984, a seven-volume final report (White 1971; 1972–73; 1975; 1976; 1976–77; 1981; 1984; 1993). Following the renewal of relations between the United States and Libya in 2004, Professors Donald White and Susan Kane (Oberlin College) met Libyan Department of Antiquities’ staff in July 2004 and CAP was granted a licence to begin archaeological work. Subsequently Professor Kane approached the Institute of Archaeology and Antiquity (IAA), University of Birmingham, in October 2004 to join CAP due to the IAA’s expertise in remote sensing and 3D imaging. Due to the difficulties of obtaining visas for American team members, the 2006 and 2007 seasons took place without the involvement of American staff. In consequence the IAA, with considerable advice and input from Professors Susan Kane and Sam Carrier of Oberlin College, has undertaken the fieldwork. Some of CAP’s 2006 topographical modelling in the Wadi Bel Gadir Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone has already been published in Libyan Studies (Kane and White 2007).
