Chapter Eighteen

Leaving the cocoon she shared with Silas, the room came alive. Alcohol-infused adults with lowered inhibitions buzzed inside her head. As soon as Silas returned with his drink, Olivia planned on encouraging him to take his beer and follow her upstairs to their room. She preferred the quietness of his mind and yearned for his warmth. Alone in the dark with him, Olivia could free some of her own inhibitions. But not yet. She had picked up a traveler on her way back from the bathroom. She returned to the table on the patio with Marc Singer in tow.

“Ignoring me isn’t going to make me go away,” the lawyer said.

Olivia slid into her seat undaunted just as Silas arrived. He handed Olivia the sparkling water she requested. They even had the ginger she asked for. Silas glanced between his wife and the lawyer, unsure what he might have missed. Olivia’s face was passive, while Singer looked poised for a fight. Silas set his beer on the table and remained standing.

“I need to speak to Dr. Osborne, alone,” Singer said, never looking Silas’ way.

“I’m the special agent in charge,” Silas reminded him.

Singer peered down at Olivia. “I’m aware, Agent Branch, but this is between the doctor and the Department of Justice.”

“Agent Branch stays, or I go.” Olivia’s tone was smooth but icy. “If the Justice Department wants to talk to me, now is your chance.”

“We could compel you,” Singer threatened.

“You could, but I don’t work for you,” Olivia reminded him.

Silas saw the first hint of fire in her eyes. “There’s no need for this,” Silas chimed in, glaring at Singer.

Neither Olivia nor Singer listened.

“I didn’t say I wouldn’t talk to you—I gave you a condition. Instead of considering it, you’re trying to bully me. I don’t respond well to bullies,” Olivia told him.

“Like Andre Roche. You said he was a bully. Is that why he’s dead?”

“Andre Roche was a known rapist and a murderer. He got what he deserved.” Her words were measured and firm, keeping Silas and Singer both in their place.

Silas couldn’t remember the last time he had seen her so angry or her eyes so green.

Olivia sipped her water and watched Singer. Her stare never wavered until he had to look away.

“I’m going to be there for Pittman’s interview,” Singer finally said.

“You’re not invited,” Olivia told him.

“You can’t keep me out.”

“Really?”

Silas heard the challenger in her words as he watched Singer’s hand go to his head. He looked like he had the beginnings of a headache.

Olivia leaned forward in her chair. “Compel. Such an interesting word.” She flashed Singer a slight smile. “Mr. Pittman will talk to me and only me. If you boys from Justice want something from him, you’re going to have to sit back and wait for me to give it to you. From now on, that’s how this works.”

Singer didn’t move. Silas wondered if he could. Maybe he was revving up to go at her again. Either way, Silas didn’t think that was the smart move.
